Before going anywhere, everyone should check the country of their choice against the latest information from the UK government (Foreign & Commonwealth Office). Not only will this site give warnings about political situations, vaccinations and potential dangers, but they also give general advice on safety and scams. Don't go anywhere until you have checked this site out.

While not as comprehensive (or as printable) as Lonely Planet, Rough Guides allows you to find our information on individual countries. There is also the opportunity to buy the Rough Guide books online with useful links.

The 'In Your Pocket' guides can be viewed online, printed and ordered at this site. The guides cover most of Eastern Europe and a bit more. Being made up of the opinions of travellers such as yourself, the reviews are honest and very helpful for getting past the 'touristy' bits of the cities it features. We at itchyfeet have used the guide for Poland and we got so much our of it that we'd recommend it as an essential tool for anyone on a visit to one of these places
