THE BLURB
The EFL industry is booming in Taiwan, so if you have a degree and a tongue, you should have no problem geting a job. Pay is good and there are some really beautiful areas that are worth visiting during your stay. Many teachers use Taiwan as a refuelling point for their finances. And of course, should you be there in Summer 2002, you can always pop across to Japan for a World Cup match - if that floats your boat....
On the downside, beware dodgy employers and going out to the island on a promise, or even on a contract. Use the available resources (below) to chat online to someone in the area you have been offered. Going with an agency that is reputable will save a lot of heartache (and cash) in the long run so don't be blinded by cushdy conditions. Some love Taiwan and some loathe it - it is one place for which the research really can pay off. One final point - when chatting online or asking questions via a message board, do your best to ensure that you are not being told great things about an organisation by a member of it with an unassociated email address...it has been known.

This geocities website has a noticeboard for jobs in Asia. Not to be missed is the 'blacklist' of dodgy organisations. You can post up queries to check the reputation of a school and will receive replies from fellow teachers that have experience of that particular organisation. There is a chat room you may enter to talk about teaching in Taiwan and many other useful pages. A worthwhile visit for the wary.

Epact Educational Services look for recent graduates to join their Teach in Taiwan program for at least one year. We haven't received any feedback on them but they are known as one of the 'giants' in Taiwan. Visit the website for more details.
