ASIAN CITIES TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 1998
TWO-HORSE RACE IN BOTH EVENTS Two narrow wins by Shijiazhuang today was insufficient for the Chinese leaders as Tashkent equalised with a 4-0 trouncing over Ho Chi Minh City and a 3-1 win over Tehran. Closing in on the joint leaders is Palembang who shut out compatriots Padang by scoring 3.5 points off Talesh. Among the local teams, Shah Alam has the best score with 15.5 points; defeating the more fancied Indian team from Chrompet in round 7. Kuala Lumpur defeated Shah Alam 2.5-1.5 in the morning session but was subsequently held to a draw by the unrated Vietnamese players. Penang outplayed Johor Bahru by 3-1 but Karachi was too stubborn to even give half a point. In the afternoon, Johor Bahru scored 1.5 against Dubai. In the Asian Womens Chess Championship, WIMs Sathe Bagyashree and Mekhri Ovezova played to a short tameless draw. Fortunately for them, WIM Xu Yuhua missed winning chances against WGM Eva Repkova. |
