8 - 22 APRIL 1998, GENTING HIGHLANDS, MALAYSIA

 

The Malaysian Chess Federation will organise the Resorts World Asian Cities Chess Championship for the Dubai Cup from 8 to 16 April 1998 and the Resorts World Asian Women's Chess Championship for the Indira Gandhi Trophy from 8 to 22 April 1998, in conjunction with the Sports & Recreation Year 1998 in Malaysia.

The official hotel and playing venue for the two events is the Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort, 8th mile Genting Highlands Resort, 69000 Pahang, Malaysia, which is about 50km from Kuala Lumpur. Resorts World Berhad, a subsidiary company of Genting Berhad, is the main sponsor of the championships.

THE RESORTS WORLD ASIAN CITIES CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Resorts World Asian Cities Chess Championship is a team event where cities from all Asian countries are invited to participate. The winners will be given custody of the Dubai Cup until the next Asian cities event. The Dubai Chess & Culture Club is contributing US$25,000 as part of the costs for this tournament.

THE RESORTS WORLD ASIAN WOMEN'S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Resorts World Asian Women's Chess Championship is a FIDE continental individual championship which is held every two years. The winner will get custody of the Indira Gandhi Trophy until the next championship.

REGULATIONS AND CONDITIONS

ASIAN CITIES CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 1998 ( DUBAI CUP ) - 8 to 16 APRIL 1998

PARTICIPATION : Participation is open to all affiliated chess federations in Zones 3.1 to 3.4. Each member federation shall have the right to send one team representing a city. Second teams from a federation shall bear their own costs at US$50 per person per day on a twin-sharing basis.

TEAM COMPOSITION : 4 Players and 2 Reserves (including Captain). All players including the reserves are required to have been members of their national federations for at least one year.

FINANCIAL REGULATIONS : Each participating federation shall pay the stipulated entry fee as contained in the financial regulations to FIDE upon confirmation of entry. Travelling costs shall be the responsibility of the participating cities. The organisers shall provide free hospitality for only one team per country.

REGISTRATION : Before 31 March 1998

SYSTEM OF PLAY AND TIME CONTROL : 9-round Swiss. Time Control is 23 moves in the first hour followed by all remaining moves in the next hour. Tie-breaks are as per the FIDE Handbook D.IV.02 Article 4.8.

PRIZE MONEY (US $6,500) & CHALLENGE TROPHY (DUBAI CUP) : US$3,000, US$2,000, US$1,000 and US$500. Board Prizes and the top three teams shall be given suitable medals. The Champion Team shall be awarded custody of the Challenge Trophy (Dubai Cub) until the next Asian Cities Chess Championship.

OTHER MATTERS : The Chief Arbiter shall be appointed after consultations with FIDE Continental President for Asia, Mr. Khalifa Al-Hitmi. The appeals committee shall be elected during the captain's meeting. Applications for Visa (where required) can be made to the Malaysian High Commision or Malaysian Embassy as soon as possible. ASIAN WOMEN'S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 1998 - 8 to 22 APRIL 1998

The current Asian Women's Champion shall have a personal right to participate. All the above participants shall be accorded full hospitality.

Other players who are willing to pay the stipulated entry fees to FIDE and pay for their own hotel and food shall be allowed to play in this Championship.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION (FOR OTHER PLAYERS) :

Twin-sharing Room with Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner :US $50 per person per day;
Single Room with Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner : US $80 per person per day

REGISTRATION : Before 31 March 1998

SYSTEM OF PLAY AND TIME CONTROL : 11-round Swiss. Time Control is 40/2 , 20/1, followed by all remaining moves in 30 minutes.

PRIZE MONEY (US$1,500) & CHALLENGE TROPHY (INDIRA GANDHI TROPHY) : Five Prizes - US$500, US$400, US$300, US$200 and US$100. The Indira Gandhi Challenge Trophy shall be awarded to the Champion. In addition, medals shall be awarded to the top three players.
