APPLYING FOR A JOB

You've found a potential position for yourself, now it's time to apply!
But the procedure is different for each employer.

If you're applying for a part-time or summer position, you'll most likely have to fill out an application form

Here's a few tips you should follow when filling it out:

  • Read the entire application before entering data

  • Make a photocopy of the original form and use it as a rough draft

  • Type out your final copy or print with black ink

  • Fill in every section (if something does not apply to you write N/A)

  • Be honest - don't make up experience

  • Keep it clean - No dog-eared corners

  • Don't eat and/or drink while applying

  • Don't write with colourful inks (such as red, purple, green)

  • Don't use cursive writing

  • Unless specified not to, attach your resume

No matter what kind of job you are applying for, it's assumed that you will bring your resume to your interview. A resume is your showcase to potential employers since it shows your work experience and skills.

Follow these steps to make your resume your road to success:

  • Make it concise - Employers spend 7-10 seconds per resume

  • Have your information clearly stated

  • It must be brief - maximum 2 pages

  • Spell Check! Make sure it makes grammatical sense!

  • Have someone else proof read it

  • Start with your most recent experience under Work Experience

  • Don't attach reference letters - instead, note "references available" at the bottom of your resume

  • Make sure it's typed and clean.

  • Don't fold it.

  • Use light-coloured (white or beige) paper.
