All Sound and mixer functions in windows come from the correct/Up-to-date and correctly installed sound card drivers.This will also cure Grayed out options in the windows mixer.

Many of windows sound problems can be cured by Using Safemode(F8 bootup/Choose Safemode/Control Panel/System/Device Manager to remove all sound card drivers found and letting windows re-install them,then update them if need be.Drivers

Note:Having anti-virus software running in the background can affect sounds playing in windows. CDAudio.The MCI (Media Control Interface)Driver has got lost.Control Panel and Start the New Hardware Wizard Check No when it asks if you want it to search automatically for new hardware. Click Next Highlight "Other Devices" click next Highlight Microsoft MCI in the left Highlight CD Audio Device(Media Control) in the right pane Click next and Ok your way out and re-boot If you still get no audio then go back the Control Panel/ MultiMedia/Advanced/Media Control Devices and check that the CD audio device/properties and that the device is enabled and re-check the windows Mixer/Options:Playback/Record and Other sections are correct and mute the line and mic on playback.

Microphones

In the 3 sections of the window's mixer/options make sure you setup the playback/record and other correctly.You do NOT want or need to hear the mike through the speakers so MUTE it on playback but have it Activated on Record,otherwise some sound cards won't let you use it(this is done to stop acoustic feedback,the high pitched whistle you here when a microphone is too close to it's source of amplification which can damage the equipment).

Codecs problems You may have to install the latest versions of MS Media Player Multimedia and maybe also the latest version of DirectX
