DirectX/Problems

If you are having trouble with any version of DirectX then just delete and re-install your sound and or video card drivers. It's best to use Safemode(F8 bootup/Safemode or install TweakUI and use it's boot tab to set a 5second delay to show the startup menu, then you don't have to keep pressing the F8 key on bootup to get to it) to make sure that Plug in an Play has not put some unwanted drivers in the"Other"section of the device manager(The Question Mark).

Backup the Registry first, free Wrp program for this.Wrp

If you want to completely Un-install directX to start fresh then go here DirectX Remover but please read carefully the instructions and backup your Registry with the WRP program from my help page.I've used this program with absolutely no probems if you read it's instructions.

When you find duplicate drivers under a section in Safemode you MUST delete ALL the drivers you find there, otherwise PnP usually just puts back the one you removed and you are back to square 1.

DirectX tries to install it's own version of your sound and video card drivers which have been certified by Microsoft, however I've found the best drivers are either those supplied with the cards or the latest downloaded drivers from the makers site. The core components of directX will work with most cards/devices drivers with usually faster and better performance I've found.

DirectX the Latest version..

DirectX 7.1

If you are having trouble with the joystick then copy/paste the current one somewhere you can find it again then extract a copy from your Win 98 CD and direct it to replace the current one(Thanks to Terry Summers for this tip).
