I've lost my CDrom/music!(and maybe my floppy drive)

Audio Cd Plays But No Sound

Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Windows setup/Multimedia/Details and un-install and re-install the Cdplay.exe and then re-check Mixer settings(make sure the faders are up and nothing you want is muted). You may need the windows Cd in the drive.

There should be three cables coming from the back of a normal IDE CDrom drive.A Large flat type IDE cable which carries Data/Wavs and Midis.A Smaller Power cable. The Smallest one carries the Audio sound to the sound card and then the computer.Make sure this one is there and/or connected well as it is the major cause of Lost Music Audio Sound and that ALL cables are secure and not damaged as this thin audio cable can easily get broken.

Warning!!!!!.Before you open the case on a computer you should shutdown and switch off the system at the wall but leave it plugged into the wall socket. This will keep the system Grounded/Earthed against static on your body. You can buy a proper Wrist-Earth Strap if you want to be 100% sure.Remember also that if the Cdrom/Floppy has a Hardware failure then nothing in software will help.

For Floppy disks try a Floppy disc head cleaner/For Cdroms try a can of compressed air similar to those used by photographers to blow away dust that may have got on to the Cdrom lens as this is sterile clean compressed air usually with a thin plastic extension with which you can get to the lens inside the Cdrom, but be careful to NEVER touch the lens and "Don'T" use Audio CD cleaner disks. Also some floppy drive cables are incorrect. The Red stripe on the side of the cable should go to pint 1 on the floppy drive. If the floppy drive light stays on all the time with no floppy in the drive you may have to cut the lug off the cable at the floppy end and spin it round. For a standard A drive the plugs at each end of the cable are used, not the middle one!

When you 1st start your machine the Splashscreens will tell you which key to press to enter, startup the BIOS of the machine.Go here if you need more BIOS enter keys/combinations BootdiskBIOS.If windows is not seeing the Cdrom at all this is the place to start.Skip this section if it is seeing the Cdrom, but can't access it or you have just lost the Music.Enter the BIOS and make sure by using the Auto-Detect Hard Drives routine that the BIOS recognizes the CDrom.Cdroms are detected as a form of Hard drive. If you re-detect the drives and all is OK the choose the, Save on Exit option. On some systems you may have to set the Cd IDE connection to NON in the BIOS but do NOT change anything else in the BIOS.

This is my Hardware Cd Setup

If you have installed TweakUI,part of the powertoys try un-ticking and re-ticking all the drive boxes even if you don't have all the drives in it's My computer tab. If you don't have it installed then try installing it.Links at Pete Forrest for installing it with Win98 as it works with All versions of windows but may need tweaking a bit for Win98,but Powertoys is a free,Must Have set of programs IMHO.

Remove all lines for the Cdrom/floppy Drive from the autoexec.bat/config.sys files(use edit to open the autoexec.bat and notepad to do the config.sys). Backup the registry and these files with the freeWRP before you do this.

Boot to Safemode(F8 Bootup/Safemode) and remove ALL drivers you find in the device manager for the CDrom/floppy drive. Run Regedit after backing up the registry and do a search for the line NOIDE(or noide) in the registry and if found, then delete. But Do nothing Else in the Registry and make sure you have used WRP. If the windows 32 bit drivers have failed to install windows will protect itself and put the NOIDE call into the registry and this can stop the Cdrom drive and or hard drives from using 32bit drivers and thus cause Compatibility mode problems and non recognition of drives. Once the lines in the autoexec.bat/config.sys files have been deleted and you have made sure that the NOIDE call does not exist then you can also Boot to Safemode(F8 Bootup/Safemode). check in the Control Panel/System/Device manager Cdrom section and delete ALL drivers found there. Also whilst there look to see if there are any devices installed under the Other option, the question mark.On a correctly configured system there should be no entries in this section or the section should not even exist.

CD Audio. The MCI (Media Control Interface)Driver has got lost.Control Panel and Start the New Hardware Wizard Check No when it asks if you want it to search automatically for new hardware. Click Next Highlight Other Devices click next Highlight Microsoft MCI in the left Highlight CD Audio Device(Media Control) in the right pane Click next and Ok your way out and re-boot If you still get no audio then go back the Control Panel/ MultiMedia/Advanced/Media Control Devices and check that the CD audio device/properties and that the device is enabled and re-check the windows Mixer/Options:Playback/Record and Other sections are correct and mute the line and mic on playback.

Re-check ALL the settings in the windows mixer/options/Properties for playback/Record and other and that all the mute boxes and faders are how you want them.

Most of the above info is also valid for Floppy disc drives but also some people have had to rename the file Hsflop.pdr and re-boot to get windows re-install to see/use their floppy drive.
Get the latest drivers.

Although you think your machine may be new it may not have been shipped with the latest drivers for ALL your hardware and manufacturers are always updating Cdroms/Modems/sound cards etc so look for the latest Drivers
