Darwen County Histories
The most successful series of local histories ever published was begun by Lord Darwen in the 1950s with the aim of fostering interest in the subject with a comprehensive and readable history of each county in one attractive and inexpensive volume. Written by an acknowledged authority, each history was given great visual impact and popular appeal by lavish use of carefully chosen illustrations and specially-drawn maps.
The series deals with the historic counties as they existed for more than a thousand years, before the boundary changes of 1974. Most volumes have gone through several completely revised new editions whereby the balance and treatment has been refined as well as the latest researches and interpretations incorporated.
