Poor Law Union Records / Jeremy Gibson, et al

The records of poor law unions of the 19th and early 20th centuries constitute a major, but under used, source of genealogical data - partly because, prior to the publication of this book, it was difficult to know what was available. These volumes set that right, and provide a detailed listing, county by county, of the extensive resources which may include information on your ancestors. There are four volumes:

1. South-East England & East Anglia.
2. The Midlands & Northern England.
3. South-West England, The Marches and Wales.
4. Gazetteer of England & Wales.

Volumes 1 & 2 are £4.50 each (including UK postage). Overseas (Airmail): £5.70. Volumes 3 & 4 are £5.00 each (including UK postage). Overseas (airmail) £6.20. The whole set is £19.00 (including UK postage). Overseas (airmail) £21.50.

Probate Jurisdictions: Where to Look for Wills / Jeremy Gibson.

Wills and other probate records are a major source for genealogists. Between the 16th and the 19th centuries, however, they were proved in a wide array of (mainly ecclesiastical) probate courts. For the beginner, identifying the appropriate court for a particular will can be quite bewildering. This guide to probate courts, by Jeremy Gibson, helps to clarify where wills might be found. It lists by county all known probate courts, giving the location of their records, and it identifies the innumerable indexes which are available. Now in its 5th edition, this is the essential guide for all genealogists needing to trace wills in England, Scotland and Wales. Published by the Federation of Family History Societies.

Price £5.10 (including 2nd class postage). Overseas (airmail): £6.60.

The Protestation Returns 1641-42 and Other Contemporary Listings

As England descended into civil war in 1641/2, both sides contended for popular support. Parliament required every inhabitant to take an oath of loyalty, which had to be signed. The signatures were kept, and many are now in the House of Lords Record Office and elsewhere; many have been published. Where they have survived these returns provide full listings of male inhabitants, and are thus of great value in tracing ancestors. This book provides a guide to what is available. It also lists surviving returns for a number of contemporary taxes & levies, etc., which provide similar useful name lists. Published by the Federation of Family History Societies, 2004.

Price £6.00 (inc. UK p&p). Overseas: £7.75.
