September 8, 2001: First in maiden special weight at Belmont Park. The time was 1:38.17 for the mile. The runner-up, Yoga, came back to win his next start. Saarland and John Velazquez won by 2 3/4.
October 6, 2001: Fourth in Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park to Officer, Jump Start, and Heavyweight Champ. Saarland stumbled badly at the start, nearly unseating jockey John Velazquez. The 1 1/16 was covered in 1:43.39.
October 27, 2001: Eighth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Belmont Park to Johannesburg, Repent, Siphonic, Publication, Officer, French Assault, and Came Home. He was beat by 5 3/4. The winner covered the 1 1/16 in 1:42.27. John Velazquez was again aboard.
November 24, 2001: First in Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct over Nokoma and Silent Fred. He and John Velazquez covered the 1 1/8 in 1:51.1 while winning by a neck.
