The Journey!

Our Journey will take us through a mystical, religious, paradise-like part of Spain. A route less frequented by mass tourism.

Plaza Mayor in Madrid

Madrid, Spain’s capital since 1561. Today a strikingly modern city, the showcase of a country determinedly turned towards the future. It is impossible not to fall under this city’s spell, when wandering through its various neighbourhoods, each with a special charm and history. Like in any Spanish town, ‘madrilenyos’ rush home for the afternoon meal and flood the streets for their ritualistic evening stroll; but unlike most of the world, Madrid still works to live, not the reverse.

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

On to Santiago de Compostela, a city which grew around the tomb of St. James. Santiago has drawn pilgrims from all over the world to its city ever since the remains of the Apostle St. James were discovered there in 813 AD Theses esteemed relics lifted Santiago into the ranks of one of Christianity’s three holy cities, alongside Rome and Jerusalem.

Finisterre - "the end of the world" in medieval times. The views which we will see are quite spectacular to say the least, with attractive beaches to the left and to the right, jagged mountains meet the unforgiving landscape of the open sea.

It is a mere 25km from sea level to the 2600m heights of the Picos de Europa. Other European ranges may be higher, but few match the beauty of the Sierra’s abrupt, jagged profile. Most of the Picos area has been granted maximum environmental protection as the Picos de Europa National Park.

Church and Monastery of Covadonga

We shall visit Cangas de Onis, founded after the Castillan victory over the Moors at Covadonga in 722. Cangas de Onis was the first Capital of the Asturian monarchy and a launching pad for the Reconquest. A pale pink neo-Gothic basilica (1901) with a statue of the virgin Mary is in Covadonga. It is called the Santa Cueva (the Holy Cave), a place of pilgrimage, as according to the legend it was exactly there that the Virgin performed a miracle and the Moors were pushed back.

Fishing village of Lastres
