    9. Help us say goodbye to winter and welcome in the spring this year at Marzanna, the fun ritual dating back to the 10th century. In the villages of Poland, a doll-like figure symbolizing winter would be created using straw that had been covering over the fields where crops had grown. It then would be marched away so it could not find its way back, and taken to a river and burned. With winter destroyed, spring could be welcomed in. While we won't be burning anything in the river, we will have a straw figure and a fireplace! Bring food and drinks for a cookout, and be ready for a good time. Be sure to dress for the weather. We have use of a grill and a covered, open shelter. The PAC will provide charcoal. Come to the Big Meadows picnic area of Highbanks Metro Park, on US Rt. 23 N. (about 3mi. north of I-270), March 21st from 2-5 P.M. The park entrance is on the left, just before Powell Rd. Call Marzena with any questions at 614-596-3282. (jm)

    3.   On December 11th, after relatively short battle with severe illness, died Dr. Władyslaw Val Metanomski (85), a long-time resident of Columbus, a close friend to many of us. Educated in chemistry-pharmacology, for the last 44 years to the last days of his life, Dr. Metanomski worked at Chemical Abstracts, owned by the American Chemical Society, where he was highly regarded and liked for his knowledge, outstanding diligence, friendliness and mild temper, as well as for his gallantry to ladies ("a real gentleman"). He was also known for his love and knowledge of opera and classical music, history and (with proper moderation) good wine. Born and raised in prewar Lwow, during the Polish campaign of September 1939 he was taken prisoner by the Red Army and sent to labor camp in Siberia. He managed to get out by joining the Polish Army formed by Gen. Anders. With the Anders Army he left the Soviet Union and after transit through Iran, Iraq and Palestine to join the British and Americans he took part in the famous Monte Cassino Battle and the in the rest of the Italian campaign. After the war ended he settled in England for university studies and work, then he transferred to Canada for more education, and finally he moved with his wife to Columbus, to join the CAS. He is survived by his wife Helena, his daughter and her husband, and two grandchildren. The Funeral Mass with good music by the Church choir and solo singers was celebrated at the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Columbus, followed by the reception. The participants included Dr. Val's family and many his co-workers and friends. He will be missed and remembered. (gs)

    11. International Festival is behind us. The Polish both, with Basia in charge of the Cultural Section and Robert in charge of the Food Court-both aided by an army of volunteers, presented itself impressively. The large number of visitors to "The Little Poland" could get acquainted with picture albums about our country, buy Cepelia souvenirs, "oplatki" (Christmas Wafers) and eat their fill of the traditional Polish kitchen fare. We were located very close to the main stage this time, therefore no one had to miss any of the interesting shows. The performance by "Lajkonik" was especially worthy of our attention - beautiful show and, most importantly, many more familiar faces!

    4. One more picnic "At the Barn" behind us. For most of us it started at noon with a soccer tournament among our fellows from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland. After few hours of a hard competitive game we had a winner: Columbus, 2nd runner up-Cleveland, 1st runner up-Cincinnati. Wonderful weather, tastefully diversified food and great atmosphere made the day another great experience. While PAC supplied hot dogs, Zywiec and keg beer, quests were asked to bring a dish to share. We all enjoyed pleasant music - special thanks to Darek, the DJ. Unfortunately, most of the gentlemen did not want to show off their dancing skills due to maximized exploitation on a soccer filed. Children occupied the dance floor. Kids, you are the best!!! We want to thank you all for coming and having a great time. Special thanks to guests from Cleveland (with priest Jurek), and from Cincinnati, who arrived with Andrzej and Ted. We hope we will have many more wonderful meetings like this in the future.

    1. Quotation of the Century: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the E nglish language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt '1907 (aj)

After a nice lunch together in a quiet restaurant, we watched a very moving movie in a library room: "Karol - A Man Who Became Pope". Hundreds of people came to the "Polka Dance" ( we had to add extra tables), the dance floor was covered, and the band "Pan Franek and Zosia's Polka Towners" convinced even the most resistant people to dance. The Ladies in the kitchen worked in two shifts, and were incredibly busy. Our Treasurer, aided by the former and the present PAC Presidents, had trouble keeping up with collecting admission for the event. The raffle, organized by Danusia and Marzena, went amazingly; tickets were sold at an olympic speed. Congratulations to those who organized the event ! We can't wait for more events like this one !

"There is not a way to overstate all that Walt Metka has done to keep our club alive over the years. Without him we would not be in existence. It has been a difficult job, and a sometimes thankless one, one that a person does because he believes in something and wants it to go on. Walt put his heart into the PAC and managed to keep things going with the help of a very small group of devoted and hard working members. Walt, you have been the driving force behind the PAC and with that we can only say, "Thank you for carrying us here." We have now had our elections, as planned, and some new names will be found on the back page listing of club officers and trustees. We welcome our new president Roman Nitze and are grateful for all the enthusiasm he now brings, as well as looking forward to some new offerings the PAC will have for its members along with having our dances. We thank Barb Young for accepting a nomination and subsequent re-election as vice president. Barb ran several "busy" meetings for us this past year and worked very hard for the club. Also, we are welcoming Robert Brzezinski as our new treasurer and Luba Kowalski as our new secretary, with our gratitude for taking on those jobs. Congratulations to all of you, and to all the newly elected trustees: Stan Vingle, Eva Klarenbach, Tim Kujawa, Dariusz Mikulski, and Dick Jones. With the growing list of new members, many of them from Poland, I have seen at our meetings a new energy emerging and a gratitude that the PAC was here to be found, so that we can all join together to enjoy our heritage. As one of our new members said aloud during a discussion on PAC election night, "One Polonia, we are all one!"
