The Cardiac Review

A useful meeting was held with Professor John Ashton and his team to discuss the cardiac review. Unfortunately there was not a very good turnout of parents as it was Halloween, but those who were there thought it was worthwhile.

John Ashton has agreed to meet separately with parents who want to discuss the report in more detail. A further meeting will take place between the group and John Ashton in 6 months to report on the progress in implementing the action plan in the review.

Professor Ashton's department will also give advice on the survey that PITY II is carrying out among its members. If your child died during or after heart surgery and you haven't sent back your cardiac survey form to Sheila Rigby, please do so.

We know that some parents have concerns about the survey as they feel it is a witch hunt - that is not our intention at all. Most of the negative view coming out of the review was about one surgeon, Mr Franks - even at this early stage we have identified concerns that affect other cardiac surgeons.

We want to be able to look at our members' experiences and see if they reflect what is in John Ashton's report. His detailed look was only over a few years, and we feel there is a need to look wider. It is just as important to send the survey form back if your experience of the hospital was positive as well as if it was negative - we need to be able to include the good and the bad so that we can give a well balanced view overall.

Any information you give is totally confidential, and will not be used for anything else. Sheila Rigby, who is organising the survey is delighted with the response so far, and would like to thank those who have returned the form, and have also rung her, and enclosed notes.

If you have any queries, please contact Sheila via the office. If you need another copy of the survey form, please contact the office and one will be sent out to you.
