we need your views

As most of the families involved in Organ Retention are aware, the building in Myrtle Street, where so many of our children's remains had been stored, is a place we all find abhorrent.

At general meetings of PITY II on January 16th 2000 and again on 13th May 2001, a motion was passed and unanimously supported by all the families, for the building in Myrtle Street to be completely demolished.

This decision was given the unequivocal support of Liverpool City Council on 30th March 2000 and PITY II set about trying to discover the ownership of the building
so that we could put this proposal to them.

In the meantime the Leader of the Council, David Henshaw sent letters to The University of Liverpool and Liverpool Health Authority, advising them of the Council's support for the PITY II proposal. We then discovered (to the council's embarrassment) that in fact Liverpool City Council were the owners of the building and that the University were lease holders.

We began discussions with the council and The University explaining our reasons for wanting this building to be demolished. As you are all aware this has, at times, been very difficult. We have now been asked what we would like to see in it's place when and not if this building is demolished.

In July The Committee of PITY II had a meeting with Alan Winter from Liverpool City Council. He works for the council within the Council Lands and Development Service. He has already had discussions with The University, who have made it apparent that they would be willing to pay for the demolition of the building only if they can purchase the land and re-build on the site.

The proposal put forward by the University is for them to build an art faculty and have a landscaped garden. Perhaps a Tree of Rememberance could be planted ? We were given assurances that if The University did rebuild on this site, that a clause would be put in their deeds that any new building could never be used for any medical purpose.

The council have made it very clear to PITY II that if they have to pay for the demolition it would be necessary to involve the general public as it would have to be done at tax-payers' expense and that this could take a very long time.

We need to know your views. We cannot come to any decisions without your help. The proposal for demolishing this building was put forward by PITY II and supported by us all. Together we need to arrive at a mutual decision for the site's future use. We hope to be able to have a meeting with both the Council and The University, but will need to be able to show them that we have consulted with all of you and that you have all been given the opportunity to express your views.

Please let us have these views as soon as possible. Please send your replies to the PITY II office. Stanley Community Enterprise Centre, 69/71 County Road, Walton, Liverpool. L4 3QD, e-mail us at pity2uk@yahoo.co.uk or fill and submit our online survey.
