Asian Tsunami

Many of you will remember that in June 2001 some of the children from families affected by un-consented organ retention completed a 15 mile sponsored walk in fancy dress through Liverpool.

They courageously raised over £1300+ and this was to be used to hold an activity day for children and parents to have a fun day with the opportunity to talk to each other about their feelings and possibly receive some counselling. Unfortunately due to various circumstances this was not possible and since then the funds have sat in the PITY II bank account.

In the January 5th 2005 edition of the Daily Mirror there was a moving article about the youngest British victim of the Tsunami in Asia. Charlie Smith was only 59 days old when he lost his life in the terrible tragedy that hit Asia on Boxing Day. His family had been staying in a small village, Unawatuna, in Sri Lanka when they were all washed away by the huge waves. Even though the debris thrown around by the huge waves was battering them, Charlie’s father fought desperately to keep hold of his small son. Eventually they were washed up onto a beach and were hanging in a tree until a surfer rescued them. Charlie was taken to hospital but unfortunately he had died during these tragic events. Many children from the small village died on that day.

Nobody reading this tragic story could have failed to be moved – as bereaved parents we know only too well how heartbreaking it is to lose a beloved child no matter what the circumstances.

Charlie’s devastated parents and their two other children have launched “Charlie’s Appeal” for the children of Unawatuna. They hope to make a permanent memorial to Charlie and the other children who died, possibly a playground or small educational centre.

After reading this tragic story discussions took place with the PITY II executive and some of those who took part in the sponsored walk and it was decided to donate the sponsor money and a small amount left over from the children’s day out at Camelot to “Charlie’s Appeal”. This totalled £1500.

We hope that in some small way our donation will help this family with their appeal and by doing so, our children can reach out to help other children who have been affected by the worst tragedy in modern history. We hope this meets with your full approval and support.
