Liverpool University: 1050 + Babies

Liverpool University Lecture TheatreAt a recent Logistics Meeting, the PITY II Executive were informed by the University of Liverpool, that in addition to the unidentifiable babies held by them, there are a number of hearts, lungs and embryos.

We were advised that the gestational age of the embryos were approximately 6/7 weeks. Dr Tim Helliwell, the pathologist who is preparing the babies for burial stated he was “almost certain” that the burials of the babies to whom the hearts and lungs belonged to had already taken place since the burials had began in August.

PITY II has not yet been advised of the exact number of hearts, lungs and embryos involved. PITY II has written formally to Tim Helliwell asking for more information regarding this issue. It is the intention that these embryos will be buried at the final funeral to be held in the next few weeks. If it is established that the hearts and lungs are part of this collection, then these will also be buried at this time.

In addition to this information, PITY II have been advised by the University that the number of unidentifiable babies held by them is now 1050 plus. We were originally advised that there were 1000 babies held by the university and we have again questioned why there has been an increase. PITY II will endeavour to keep all members informed of any further information received.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
