Burial of Unidentifiable Babies in Liverpool

As we reported, a Steering Group was set up to arrange for the burial of unidentifiable babies. A thorough check has been undertaken to ensure that there are no records that could identify any of these babies. It would be necessary to have two distinct and corroborative patient identifiers to enable a positive identification to be made.

In the case of these babies there are no patient identifiers whatsoever. It would be absolutely impossible to ever relate them to any enquirers. The issues surrounding the burial of these babies are many and complex, but good progress has been made.

It was decided at the Steering Group meeting, to form four smaller sub-groups, each with their own specific task. The four sub-groups and their members are:-

There is a great deal of planning to do, but all those involved are determined that these babies will be buried with respect and dignity. Hopefully, it will not be too long before the first funerals can take place. We will keep you all informed as arrangements are in place. At the moment we can only say that babies will be interred at Allerton Cemetery over a likely timescale of six months.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Ron Gould, fully supports the burial of these babies and has pledged the support of Liverpool City Council.

PITY II has requested that a piece of land in the cemetery is donated for the purpose of these burials. Although we are hopeful that our request will be met, confirmation has yet to be received.

It is envisaged that a short graveside service will take place at each funeral, with a memorial service being held after all the burials have taken place.

It has been suggested that either the Metropolitan or Anglican cathedral could be the venue for the memorial service and we would like your views as to whether this would be acceptable or if a smaller venue should be used email PITY II.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
