Human Tissue Bill: Presumed Consent Quashed

As you are aware, the new Human Tissue Bill was published in December 2003. The Bill was debated by a group of MPs in early February and an MP, Dr Evan Harris, proposed an amendment to have 'presumed consent' included in the new Bill.

We are pleased to report that this amendment has been quashed. Like you we believe that any new law has to be based on the principle of informed consent. We would like to say 'thank you' to everybody who sent postcards to their MPs opposing the proposed amendments.

Other support groups from around the country supported PITY II in lobbying MPs and their members also sent cards. One North West MP said, "We have been bombarded with Postcards".

The Bill is due to have its third reading in the House of Commons. It had been hoped that this would be before the Easter recess but so far no date has yet been set. After this, the bill will go to the House of Lords to be debated.

We will monitor the progress of the bill closely and will keep you all informed. The debates can be read on the parliamentary web-site www.parliament.uk
