Retained Organs Commission

The Retained Organs Commission held their latest public meeting in London on December 4th. It was attended by a number of family representatives from Liverpool, Cambridge, Dorset, Dublin, Manchester, Norwich and various other places around England.

This was on the same day that the new Human Tissue Bill was published and those in attendance were able to obtain a copy of the new bill.

Everybody in attendance was pleased to see that the new bill had been published but were cautious about it's contents until they had had time to
digest what the new bill contained.

Concern has been expressed by a number of family groups that the Commission will reach the conclusion of its work by 31st March 2004 and that so far a new Human Tissue Authority has not been set up, thus leaving some outstanding issues. It had been hoped that a new authority would be in place by 1st April 2004 to continue the work of the commission, albeit in a different format. The Commission and the DOH are in discussion to progress this forward.

The Commission are in the process of having discussions with the 28 Strategic Health Authorities around the country who will take over the responsibility for handling casework and enquiries from families. They are being encouraged to work with local support groups so that 'the expertise and knowledge of groups can influence the monitoring role of the Health Authorities'.

The last public meeting of the Retained Organs Commission will take place on Thursday 5th February 2004 commencing 9am. The venue for the meeting is Avonmouth House, Avonmouth Street, London SE1 6NX.

Minutes and papers from the commission's meetings can be viewed on the web or obtained from their helpline; tel: 0800 092 0203.
