Retained Organs Commission Meeting - Leicester - 9/10 July 2003

The Retained Organs Commission held their 17th meeting on the 9/10th July in Leicester. Jan Robinson was there as a member of the Commission, whilst Alice, Paula and Christine attended as observers.

The meeting was primarily for families in Leicester and the surrounding areas, although quite a few family members attended from other parts of the country. It was quite a lively meeting and every one who wanted to had a chance to air their views.

Paula asked a question about the unidentifiable babies which had been retained without consent in the Institute of Child Health, Liverpool, and why they could not be respectfully buried, as they can never be identified.

The Commission responded that they had put advice to the Department of Health on the 30th of June, some of which covers this issue. Unfortunately Ministerial approval has to be given before any decisions can be taken and the Commission cannot guarantee a particular outcome or timescale. Perhaps you would like to write to, or fax (see left of screen), your local MP to ask for their support?

The meeting in Leicester was the last formal meeting to be held outside of London, the next one being held is on the 18th of September.

The Retained Organs Commission comes to the end of its work at the end of March 2004.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
