Tissue Blocks and Slides Consultation

Last year we sent out various consultation documents from the Retained Organs Commission and the Clinical Ethics and Human Tissue branch of the Department of Health.

The purpose was to invite those affected by organ removal and retention to make their views known on various issues including future new legislation, and by so doing, making a contribution to our work towards achieving changes to the law.

The latest consultation document to be issued is from the Retained Organs Commission and relates to Tissue Blocks & Slides.

Recently PITY II posted a copy of the booklet entitled 'Tissue Blocks and Slides : A Consultation Note' to every member. There are nine questions to consider. Your views are welcome on these questions or on any other related matters.

The following is extracted from the booklet and explains the reason for the consultation:

'The Commission is seeking views on the future legal status of tissue blocks and slides taken from both surgical (during life) and post mortem (after death) procedures because the current legal position is not clear. The consultation links with the work the Department of Health is undertaking to review the law relating to human tissue and organs'

One of the tasks given to the ROC is to advise the government ministers on changes in the law. Advising on the future legal status of Tissue Blocks and slides is part of that task

If you haven't already sent your comments to the ROC then we request that you do so as soon as possible. The closing date given for replies is 14th February 2003. You can send your comments in writing to:
