Plastinated
Organ Exhibition Von Hagens' Exhibition You are no doubt already aware that the exhibition of plastinated bodies and body part Body Works is to be allowed to proceed. The following statement was issued yesterday by the Department of Health. "Statement on 'Body Works' exhibition We have sought and received a detailed description of the process used by Prof Von Hagens. The Anatomy Act was not framed with cases such as the Body Works exhibition in mind. The legal position with regard to this exhibition is not clear cut and in the circumstances, the exhibition may proceed without the need for a licence under the Act. Department of Health" 19/03/02 The
Retained Organs Commission has consistently expressed its opposition
to such an exhibition taking place in this country. May I re-iterate
my personal horror that so little respect is demonstrated by those
mounting this exhibition for the dignity of the dead. I am also deeply
sorry that this exhibition will re-open the pain you and your members
have already suffered for so long. I can only ask you to work with us to establish a system of laws
and regulations which operates effectively to manifest society's respect
for the dead and reflects the legitimate interests of their families. Yours sincerely
