Meeting with the Secretary of State for Health Alan Milburn, Secretary of State for Health, paid a visit to Liverpool on the 21st March 2002 and met with a delegation of PITY II Committee members at Broadgreen Hospital. Mr. Milburn was accompanied by Maria Eagle. M.P. and members of his staff. Due to Mr. Milburn's other commitments the meeting lasted approximately 45 minutes. As the time was limited the main item of discussion was the governments promised new legislation. New legislation was absolutely necessary in order to ensure that the events of the past could not be repeated. Mr Milburn was asked if the government was still committed to the changes to the law that they had promised. Mr Milburn stated that he was very committed to a change in the law and the government were of the same mind. He said a lot of work was going on behind the scenes. Guidance, consultation and informed consent were all being initiated. The wider picture had also to be looked at. The coroner's laws for example. A new review body had been set up by the government under the chairmanship of Mr. Tom Luce to review the whole of the Coroners system. PITY II have already met with the review team and will have further meetings with them in the future. New Codes of Practice, New Post Mortem Consent forms for use nationally, advice leaflets and so forth, have been drafted as part of an interim framework in advance of new legislation. The Secretary of State was asked if he would be prepared to write a personal letter to parents and families involved for in inclusion in our Newsletter. This he agreed to do and the article has, subsequently, been received. Read article The full minutes of the meeting with Mr Milburn are available to members upon request.
