General Medical Council A useful meeting was held in January between PITY II and the current President of the GMC, Sir Donald Irvine, and his successor Sir Graham Catto. This was in response to concerns raised by PITY II over the failure of the GMC to pursue disciplinary actions against most of the doctors criticised in the Redfern Report. Sir Donald was very concerned about the attitudes of the medical profession and felt that these attitudes needed to change. He felt that attitudes to consent by some doctors were very wrong. He had been trying to influence medical schools to provide better leadership, but he acknowledged that cultural change was needed, and this would take time. In future, doctors would have regular assessments and would have to adhere to good practice or they would not be allowed to carry on working. However, when doctors were facing disciplinary action for incidents that occurred in the past they were judged by the medical standards that were recognised at that time. Both Sir Donald and Sir Graham apologised for what had happened in the past. Sir Graham said that he would welcome the opportunity to return to Liverpool in the future to continue discussions.
