Scottish
Inquiry
The Scottish Inquiry into organ retention, headed by Professor Sheila McClain, has produced a report with recommendations for the overhaul of the hospital post-mortem system. PITY II has not seen the actual full report as yet, but its committee has been reliably informed that the Independent Inquiry is calling for new legislation to be introduced that requires all hospital post mortems, including organ retention, to be authorised by relatives - with penalties to be imposed upon anyone who acts without authorisation. The McClain Report, we believe, also mentions giving ownership of the body, after death, to the relatives rather than to the hospital.
