We are now approaching the end of another year. The seven months following the AGM in May have been particularly busy with PITY II being very actively engaged in many activities on behalf of the membership. Below is a summary of some of them:

  • Sunday 2nd September was the date of the trip to CAMELOT organised by PITY II. Thanks to donations from Radio City's 'Give a Child a Chance' appeal, Radio Merseyside & the Co-operative Bank the children and families had a very enjoyable day out.

  • September - The ROC asks PITY II to help arrange a public meeting in Liverpool especially for the people in the North West. The meeting was held in the Suites Hotel in Knowsley on the evening of 11th September. The next day -12th September - we attended a second ROC meeting at Goodison Park. The same evening some members of the ROC visited PITY II 's office for a wrap up meeting to discuss the proceedings of the previous two days.

As a result on the 17th October the Review Team Chairman Mr. Tom Luce and Secretary Mr. Mike Gallagher visit the PITY II office for a meeting to discuss our input into the review and any changes that we would like to see in the Coroners system. A list of the suggestions and ideas that were put forward at the meeting were later sent to Mr. Luce and Mr. Gallagher. A copy is available to members on request.

  • 6th December - five representatives from the Women's Hospital attend a meeting in PITY II offices. They agree to attend a future meeting if specifically requested. The same evening, Prof. Brazier and Steve Catling visit PITY II offices to attend our meeting. This is another of their regular progress report meetings.

In addition to the above we have had input into the New Codes of Practice, National Consent Forms for Hospital Post-Mortems and also Coroners Post-Mortems relating to organ retention. Also leaflets explaining the procedures and consent forms for parents and relatives, which are being drafted by the Human Organs, Tissue & Ethics branch of the Dept. of Health. Also the ROC leaflets relating to the return of organs to relatives. We have been promised that we will be consulted with regard to any future new legislation.

We have also had committee meetings when we have not had any visitors that are not listed above - I have started to lose count.

We also, of course, write many letters on behalf of our members, especially after the GMC's decision in August/September and send out regular information letters to the membership. We respond to the media as and when required.

As I said at the start, the last few months have been extremely busy and I apologise if I have omitted anything from the above list. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone for their hard work, dedication and commitment. A short break to recharge batteries is needed so we have decided that our next committee meeting will be on Thursday 10th January 2002. We will still be available if you need us. You can still contact individual committee members and co-ordinators and the office phone lines will be open.
