Hazel Blears MP, Under Secretary of State for HealthHazel Blears MP, Under Secretary of State for Health

Hazel Blears, Under-Secretary of State for Health, is the new Minister responsible for Organ Retention Issues. A role she takes over from Lord Hunt. She was newly appointed as Health Minister after the General Election.

Hazel Blears, along with her Parliamentary Secretary Andrew Larter and Information Officer Erica McAlpine, paid a visit to PITY II on 26th September for a meeting with the executive committee.

The meeting lasted over two hours and covered a wide range of issues including the General Medical Council's (GMC) decision and the NHS Trust decision to reinstate certain administrative staff that had been subject to disciplinary proceedings after the Redfern report.

Apparently the GMC were only given the Redfern Report and were not actually given a separate list of doctors by the Chief Medical Officer as was reported some months ago.

The future change in the law relating to Organ retention that we have all been promised was also discussed. We were told that the earliest time for the bill to be debated would be the next parliamentary session commencing October 2002.

We expressed our concern at the delay and of the lateness of the date. The Minister said they did not want to rush in with an ill thought out bill that would have many loop holes and at the end of the day would be ineffective. It would require a great deal of thought and planning. We emphasised the fact that parents and families in general wanted legislation that dealt with organ removal and retention in a positive manner and that had 'bite'; with clear rules and directives that would carry stiff penalties for those who flouted the law.

We requested that the parents be consulted with regard to the legislation forming process and to be allowed to have meaningful input. The Minister agreed that it was important that dialogue between the government and the group continued in a constructive manner.

The Minister agreed to investigate certain issues raised at the meeting and to get back to us in the near future. We will keep you informed.

A copy of the meeting minutes is available to members on request.
