Child Bereavement Trust Conference

"Baby and Child Death - Managing the Issues"
Royal Festival Hall, London, 15th May 2001

The Child Bereavement Trust is a national group concerned about improving the way that doctors and nurses deal with deaths of children.

Jenni Thomas from the trust is on the Retained Organs Commission. She also organised the counselling that was available on the day the Redfern Report was published.

The trust has organised a conference, aimed at doctors and nurses, who are attending because they want to make things better in the future. It will cover how to communicate with bereaved families, dealing with general issues, not just about consent for post mortem. It is not a conference about organ retention.

Alan and Julie Jarvis, PITY II parents, are talking at the conference. The trust would like to invite some PITY II families to attend the conference as part of the audience. They would be able to ask questions of the panel. There will also be a video made for training doctors and nurses, and parents would be encouraged to contribute to this video.

The trust can fund 7 couples or individuals to go to the conference by paying travel expenses - they cannot meet hotel expenses. If you are interested in trying to improve the way that doctors and nurses deal with bereavement and would like to attend, please contact the Child Bereavement Trust on 01494 446648.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
