A Welcome from Alice
Acting Chair of PITY II

Acting Chair, Alice ProcterHello, my name is Alice Procter, I am the Acting Chair of PITY II and I would like to take this opportunity to personally welcome you to the website of our group. I would like, too, to thank our last Chair, John O'hare, for the marvellous and conscienious job he did for our group. Both John, and his wife, Pauline, dedicated countless hours to work toward achieving our aims, and moved us closer and closer to getting the law changed so that these dreadful occurances never happen to anyone else again. Thank you both.

Most of you will already know that PITY II means Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice. You may know, too, that it was formed when it became clear that thousands of organs had been retained, from children who died, by Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool UK (and other hospitals/centres throughout the UK), without any of their parents' knowledge or consent.

It is sad, really, that this site even exists. It was born through horrific circumstances that numerous families would much rather not have experienced. Alas, these circumstances did come to be and a great need for support, information and a longing desire for a change in the law [so that these things never happen again] arose.

Sad or not, the site does exist and we have found that it is fulfilling a number of needs. As an immediate source of information for families involved, especially those who have only just found out that their children are affected, it has proved to be invaluable. We know, too, that as well as being commended by the British Government, the Retained Organs Commission and other organisations, the site has been accessed from around the world and that it has been entered into the bibliographies of degree students studying a number of subjects including media and law.

If you are from a family that has been affected by organ retention (child or adult), I hope you find the information provided here to be of use. Remember, too, that you can always email PITY II with any comments and/or queries that you may have and either I, or another member of the committee, will endeavour to deal with the matter arising.

Thank you for visiting the PITY II website.

ALICE.
