Arrangements for Burial of Unidentified Babies

jasmineFollowing confirmation by Liverpool City Council, Friday 23rd July 2004, to donate land at Allerton Cemetry, arrangements for the respectful burial of unidentifiable foetuses, body parts and tissue, held in Liverpool University's Institute of Child Health and at Alder Hey Hospital, can now proceed to ensure that the first of the burials takes place on Thursday 5th August 2004.

The plot is CH32 and will be known as the Baby Garden and the first burials, attended by the Bishop of Liverpool, will take place at 11.00 am on the 5th and then every following Thursday until all of the babies have been buried.

At the first funeral there will be fifty babies buried. It is estimated that it will take two hours to inter the caskets. Those wishing to attend are asked to arrive just before 11.00 when the fiftieth casket will be placed into the grave which will be accompanied by a short graveside service (estimated to last about ten minutes).

To find the location, from the main entrance of Allerton Cemetry walk past the chapel and through the iron gates and the Baby Garden is on the left of the main drive.

Along with plans to develop a memorial at Allerton Cemetry, PITY II will provide flowers for each funeral and, of course, others may do so if they wish.

It is envisaged that there will be a memorial service late next spring and everyone who wishes to will have the opportunity to attend.
