Scholarship Rules

Daughters of the American Revolution awards scholarships through its Scholarship Committee. Please read all information carefully. All applicants must be citizens of the United States and must attend an accredited college or university in the United States. All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter.

Only applications completed correctly and submitted in one package will be considered. Incorrect applications are discarded. No records are returned. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, religion, sex or national origin. Do not submit a personal photo. If your records feature a photo, please cover it! In order to be notified that your application has been received, please include a stamped self-addressed postcard. Only winners are notified, approximately two to three months after the deadline.

Awards are placed on deposit with the college or university; any unused portion shall be returned to the National Society. Awards are judged on academic excellence, commitment to field of study and financial need. No affiliation with DAR is necessary unless specified. All applications, except for the American History Scholarship, must be received by the National Chairman by the deadline indicated for the specific scholarship. Therefore, contact your local DAR chapter early in the process.

Application packets can be requested from the Office of the Committees, NSDAR, 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DC 20006-5392.

In addition to NSDAR scholarships, individual states and chapters may also offer scholarships. This information should be obtained from the state or local chapter.

Old York Chapter does not offer a local scholarship.

Scholarships Available

  • MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIPS: For each group of scholarships, it is only necessary to submit one application for consideration for all awards in the group.

    Medical School-
    Alice W. Rooke Scholarship, Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship:
    awarded to students who have been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (pre-med does not qualify) at approved, accredited medical schools. The MacGregor Scholarship only is also available to graduate students in the field of psychiatric nursing. This award of $5,000 annually for up to four years with annual transcript review required by the National Chairman required for renewal. Applications must be received by the national chairman by April 15.

    Nursing School -
    Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship, Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship:
    awarded to students who have completed at least one year of nursing school. This is a one time award of $500. Applications must be received by the national chairman by February 15 or August 15. Winners may only receive one award.

  • Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship- awarded to students completed at least year of nursing school. Applicants must be members, eligible for membership, or related to a member of NSDAR, C.A.R., or SR. Please enclose a page showing your eligibility or relationship to a member. This is a one-time award in the amount of $500. Applications must be received by the national chairman by February 15 or August 15.

  • Occupational Therapy Scholarship- awarded to students who have completed at least one year of study in an accredited school of occupational (includes art and music therapy) or physical therapy. This is a one-time award in the amount of $500. Applications must be received by the national chairman by February 15 or August 15.

  • American History Scholarship- awarded to graduating high school seniors who will be majoring in American History. This award is intended to promote the study of our history among our finest students. American History Scholarship applications are first judged on the State level. Two winners from each Division are sent to be judged on the National level. This is an award of $2,000 per year for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Second place awards of $1,000 each year for up to four years may be given as funds are available. Deadline: February 1, to State Chairman, DAR Scholarship.

  • Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship- awarded to students entering their junior or senior year of college who are majoring in either political science, history, government, or economics. This is a one-time award in the amount of $1,000. Deadline: February 15.

  • J.E. Caldwell Centennial Scholarship- awarded to outstanding students pursuing a course of graduate study in the field of historic preservation. This award has been made possible through the J.E. Caldwell Company, official jewelers of the NSDAR, in honor of the DAR Centennial. This is a one-time award in the amount of $2,000. Deadline: February 15.


    Specific Scholarships

  • Idamae Cox Otis Scholarship; Mildred Louise Brackney Scholarship- awarded to graduates of Kate Duncan Smith DAR School or the Tamassee DAR Schools. Applications are through the respective school scholarship committees. This is a one-time award in the amount of $1,000. Awards are made in June.

  • Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship- awarded to graduating high school seniors whose MOTHERS are current NSDAR members (no other relationship qualifies). This is a $1,000 award each year for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Outstanding students may apply for an additional four years as needed for continuing study. Deadline: February 15.

  • Longman-Harris Scholarship- awarded to graduating seniors of Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, through the school's scholarship committee. This is a $2,000 award for up to four years with an annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Awards are made in June.

  • Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship- awarded to a graduating high school senior who has been accepted into the Jones Learning Center, University of Ozarks. Applications must be requested directly from the Learning Center upon acceptance into this program for learning disabled students. This is an award of $1,000 each year for up to four years, with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal, Awards are made in June.

  • American Indian Scholarship

    The American Indians Committee of the National Society DAR awards one-time scholarships of $500 to Native Americans. All awards are judged based on academic achievement and financial need. Applicants must be Native Americans in financial need and have a grade point average of at least 2.75.  No exceptions. The award is available to Native American students of any age, any tribe, in any state, striving to get an education. Monies are deposited directly with the respective school. To receive the scholarship application, you must send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Office of Committees, American Indian Scholarship, 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DC 20006-5392. Applications must be received for the fall term by July 1; for the spring term, by November 1.

    The following must be included in one mailing:
    1. Letter giving family history, financial status and education objective.
    2. Official copy of last semester transcript, or last transcript obtained and sent by previous school.
    3. Three letters of recommendation from persons such as teachers, clergy or others who have personally known applicant for a minimum of two years.
    4. Proof of American Indian blood as indicated by letter or proof papers.

    To be referred to a chapter in your area by mail, contact the National Society.

    Contact Old York Chapter if you are a student in the York, Maine area attending Berwick Academy, Noble, Marshwood, Traip, York or Wells High School. An application and financial need form will be mailed to you.

    The process needs to commence early in the school year in order to meet all deadlines in a timely manner.
