Is there a God?
By Timothy Glover
The Bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God. It only asserts, In
the beginning, God created created the Heavens and the Earth(Gen.l:l).Therefore, the Bible proves nothing to
the unbeliever. So, let us reason together.
Most would accept that man and the world exists. Human reason would allow for only two
possible explanations; Something has always existed or there was a time when nothing
existed. The latter is not possible. If I sealed a glass jar with nothing inside, what
will be in it after billions of years? NOTHING! Something cannot come from nothing.
Therefore, determining what has always existed is necessary.
The first cause could be either matter or mind. If non-living matter or mind existed, it
must be eternal. Otherwise, we are bound to explain where either originated.
Could matter be the eternal first cause? All matter consists of chemical elements that
make up atoms. Left to themselves, atoms remain constant or decay. However, an outside
force may cause changes. For example, apart from an outside force, elements will never
produce a car. If some force (man) makes a car from them, it remains a car until it begins
to rust and decay. Time does not improve the car nor cause it to evolve into something
else. Time can only cause the decay of anything formed of matter.
Further, these elements must change into a living cell. It is more confusing to comprehend
how we can create a cell from inanimate matter. Also, if we could, we would need force to
create it. The origin of life is based on biogenesis. Life comes from life not nonliving
organisms. Scientists may make something with the same chemical properties and appearance
of a living organism but they cannot give it life. What, then, gives matter life?
Someone once compared the probability of life from chance as likely as a dictionary
resulting from an explosion in a printing shop. As already mentioned, matter does not
improve with time and cannot change without something acting upon it. It is more
reasonable to believe that intelligence is the first cause. We cannot conceive of a watch
evolving over time. It had a maker.
Do you recall the "Minolta" commercial that ended with, "only from the mind
of Minolta?" Nothing with precision or beauty would be the result of nonliving,
non-active matter which just happened! When we examine the human body, is it reasonable to
assume that it just evolved? We see a painting and know there was an artist. Would we
argue, "Oh, it just happened over time?" Is this called "science"? The
truth is, all accept the origin of life by faith. By faith, the Christian accepts that
the worlds were framed by the word of God.(Heb. 11:3). Evolutionists believe
the various theories discussed in this article and are caught in a web of scientific
impossibilities that are more difficult to believe. I maintain that it is more reasonable
to believe that mind is the cause of life; that not only did God form man from nonliving
matter but breathed into him the breath of life and he became a living soul. Based upon
reason, which is more reasonable to believe?
