Uncommon Names

Aditi
Aditi was one of the nine daughters of Kardam Rishi. She was married to Maharshi Kashyap. Aditi is the mother of all Devtaa and Bhagvaan Vaaman. Her sister was also married to Kashyap Jee and was the mother of all Daitya.

Alaayudh
Alaayudh was a Raakshas and was a friend of Hidimb, Kirmeeraa and Bakaasur. He came to Duryodhan to fight for him to take revenge from Bheem for their killing.

Alambooshaa
Alambooshaa was a Raakshas and fought from Duryodhan's side. He was a friend of Bakaasur and joined the army of Duryodhan to take revenge of his friend's killing from Bheem.

Ashwasen
Ashwasen was the son of Takshak Naag and was saved from Khaandav Van's fire by his mother. (3youth/14khaandav)

Avantee Brothers
Avantee Brothers were killed by Arjun on the 14th day of Kurukshetra war, the day Jayadrath was killed.

Baahleek
When Mahaabhish was to take birth on Prithvi because of the Shaap of Brahmaa Jee, he decided to take birth in Prateep's house who was ruling in Hastinaapur at that time. Raajaa Prateep had three sons - Devaapi, Shantanu and Baahleek. Shantanu had three sons - Bheeshm, Chitraangad and Vichitraveerya; and Vichitraveerya had Kaurav and Paandav. Baahleek had a son named Somdatt. Somdatt had two sons - Bhoorishravaa and Shal. Thus Baahleek was the grandfather of Kaurav and Paandav.

Bakaasur
Bakaasur was a Raakshas who used to trouble Ekchakraa Nagaree people. After Paandav left Hidimb Van, they went to Ekchakraa Nagaree and stayed in a Braahman's house in Braahman's disguise.

Bhaanusen
Bhaanusen was the son of Karn. He had three brothers - Vrishsen, Sushen and Satyasen.

Bhagdatt
Bhagdatt was the king of Praagjyotish. He was a good friend of Duryodhan. He was a friend of Indra too. He had the elephant named Supreetikaa. He was invincible and very intelligent. It was not easy to fight with him.

Bhoorishravaa
He was the son of Somdatt. Raajaa Prateep had theree sons - Baahleek, Shantanu, and Devaapi. Baahleek went for Tap, so Shantanu became the king. Bahleek's son was Somdatt, and Somdatt's son was Bhoorishravaa. He was a good friend of Duryodhan. He had a brother named Shal also. Both brothers fought from Duryodhan's side in Kurukshetra war. Bhoorishravaa was killed by Saatyaki on 14th day of the war. There was a personal quarrel between Saatyaki's father and Somdatt, that is why Saatyaki killed Bhoorishravaa to take revenge of that.

Chekitaan
He fought from Paandav's side in Kurukshetra war.

Chitrasen
The king of Gandharv. Teaches music and dance to all Apsaraa in the court of Indra. He taught music and dance to Arjun also. Then he became friend of Arjun. It was useful during his Agyaatvaas. Once picks up a quarrel with Duryodhan and captures him at the order of Indra. Yudhishthir gets him released through Arjun and Bheem.

Chitrasen
Chitrasen was the son of Karn. He had three brothers - Vrishsen, Satyasen, Sushen. Chitrasen was killed by Nakul on the 18th day of Kurukshetra war.

Daaruk
Daaruk is the Saarathee (charioteer) of Krishn.

Damghosh
Damghosh was the king of Chedi Desh. He was the husband of Vasudev's another sister named ... They had a son named Shishupaal who was killed in Raajsooya Yagya of Yudhishthir.

Dhrishtketu
He was the son of Shishupaal and the king of Chedi Desh after Shishupaal's death. He came to see Yudhishthir along with Krishn in Kaamyak Van. He also came to him at the time of war with his one Akshauhinee army. He fought from Yudhishthir's side. He was killed by Drone on the 14th day of the war - the day Jayadrath was killed by Arjun.

Durjaya
Durjaya was one of the brothers of Duryodhan. He was killed by Bheem on 14th day of war.

Durmarshan
He was one of the brothers of Duryodhan. He was involve while Drone built the special Vyooh to stop Arjun to kill Jayadrath. He was also killed by Bheem on the 14th day of war.

Durmukh
Durmukh was one of the brothers of Duryodhan. He was killed by Bheem on 14th day of war.

Gad
Gad as Balraam's brother. He was Arjun's good friend. They studied together in Drone's Gurukul. Arjun heard a lot about Subhadraa from him only, since then he used to love her.

Gomukh
He is the son of Maatali - the Saarathee (charioteer) of Indra.

Gunaakeshee
She is the daughter of Maatali. Read a story about her marriage here.

Hidimb
Hidimb was a Raakshas who lived in Hidimb Van. When Paandav escaped from Laakshaa Grih of Baaranaavat, they rested for a while in Hidimb Van not knowing that it was Hidimb Van and Hidimb Raakshas might eat them. Hidimb smelled human flesh and asked his sister Hidimbaa to bring human flesh as he had not eaten that for quite some time. Hidimbaa went there but seeing Bheem, she gotr attracted to him and could not bring human flesh for her brother. When Hidimbaa did not come for quite some time Hidimb himself came out in search of human flesh. He came to the same place and saw Hidimbaa standing near Bheem. Hidimbaa requested him that he should not kill Bheem as she loved him but Hidimb didn't listen to her and attacked on Bheem. After a brief fight Bheem killed him.

Hidimbaa
Hidimbaa was the sister of Hidimb. They lived in Hidimb Van. Irvaan was the son of Arjun and Uloopee. Irvaan was killed by Alambooshaa Raakshas in Mahaabhaarat war on its 8th day.

Jaraa
Jaraa was a Raakshasee who picked up two pieces of a baby boy from near a palace. Instead of eating them, she started playing with them. Suddenly they joined and the baby got alive. She took the baby home and looked after him as her own child. That boy was called Jaraasandh.

Jataasur
Jataasur was a Raakshas who was killed by Bheem. On the 14th Day of the war, in the night when Ghatotkach went to fight with Karn, his son came to Duryodhan and requested him to fight from his side. Duryodhan gave him permission to fight for him and sent him to fight with Ghatotkach. At one time Bheem killed his father, so he wanted to take revenge of his father's killing.

Jayatsen
He 

Kaikaya Brothers
They were five in number like Paandav. These were Paandav's friends and fought for them in war. One of them was Brihadkshatra who was killed by Drone on 14th day of the war - on the day Jayadrath was killed by Arjun.

Kaling
The king of kaling Desh. He was killed by Bheem on the 2nd day of the war. His son Sakradev was also killed by Bheem on the same day.

Ketumaan
Ketumaan was also killed by Bheem on the 2nd day of the war when he was helping the king of Kaling.

Kirmeeraa
Kirmeeraa was a Raakshas. He was the brother of Bakaasur, who was killed by Bheem in Ekchakraa Nagaree, and a good friend of Hidimb, who was also killed by Bheem while they were in Hidimb forest after the Baaranaavat fire. His sister Hidimbaa got attracted to Bheem so she married him and produced a son named Ghatotkach. He was killed by Bheem while they had already spent three nights in Van of their exile period.

Kritvarmaa
Both Kritvarmaa and Saatyaki were the cousins of Krishn. But Kritvarmaa fought from Duryodhan's side while Saatyaki fought from Paandav's side in Kurukshetra war.

Kshaatradev
Kshaatradev was one of the ten sons of Raajaa Drupad - Dhristdyumn, Shankh, Shikhandee, Uttamaujaa, and

Kuntibhoj
Kuntibhoj was the father of Kuntee. He was a cousin and a great friend of Kuntee's real father Mahaaraaj Shoorsen (Krishn's paternal grandfather). Kuntibhoj was childless so Shoorsen gave his first child to him. The child was a girl and her name was Prithaa. When Prithaa had come to Kuntibhoj's house, she was called Kuntee. Kuntibhoj fough from Paandav's side.

Maatali
Maatali is the Saarathee (charioteer) of Indra Dev. He had a daughter named Gunaakeshee. (read a story about him here) and a son named Gomukh.

Nivaatkavach
They were a class of Daitya - the descendents of Prahalaad. They were covered with impenetrable armor. They were 30 million in number and lived in depths of sea. They were killed by Arjun when he was in Swarg to collect Divine weapons from his father Indra. In fact they had a Var that Devtaa could not kill them, that is why Arjun, a human being from the Earth, was assigned this work to kill them.

Paulomaa
Paulomaa were the very the mighty sons of Pulomaa who was one of the wives of Maharshi Kashyap

Purochan
Purochan was a minister in Dhritraashtra's court. He helped Duryodhan, Shakuni etc to build the Laakshaa Grih in Baaranaavat to burn Paandav and Kuntee. But unfortunately Paandav got this information and they escaped after setting the fire in that palace. Purochan also burned in that fire.

Rishi Bharadwaaj
Rishi Bharadwaaj was the son of Brihaspati. A strange story is told about his birth. His mother, the wife of Utathya, was pregnant by her husband and by Brihaspati. Then the former child kicked the latter one out of the womb. Then Brihaspati said - "Cherish this son as "Bharadwaaj". Tattirya Upanishad says that he lived though three lives and he became immortal to union with Soorya Dev. In Raam's times he was living in Allahaabaad or Prayaag (Sangam), and in Mahaabhaarat times he was living in Haridwaar. Raajaa Bharat adopted him as his son and appointed the Crown Prince of Hastinaapur. He had a son named Drone. This Drone was the same Drone who was the teacher of Kaurav and Paandav.

Rishi Brihadaashwa
This Muni came to Yudhishthir when Arjun was away to Indra Lok to get Divine Astra from Him. When Yudhishthir asked him that had he seen anyone else more unfortunate than him? he told him the story of Nal and Damayantee. And taught him the art of dice game.

Rishi Dhaumya
Rishi Dhaumya was the Kul Guru of Paandav. He was along with them since the time of their exile.

Rishi Lomash
We meet Lomash Muni in Indra Lok when Arjun is there to collect Divine weapons. Indra sent him to Paandav to inform them that Arjun was all right and he will be reaching there soon.

Rishi Maitreya 
Rishi Maitreya came to Hastinaapur to warn Dhritraashtra about what he did to his younger brother's sons, but Dhritraashtra did not agree with him. So he gave him Shaap that whatever vows Bheem took will come true.

Rishi Vrishparvaa
He was the Rishi in whose Aashram Paandav stayed for one year while returning after receiving Arjun from Swarg.

Rukmee
Rukmee was one of the four sons of Raajaa Bheeshmak of Vidarbh Desh. He was the eldest son. He had a sister named Rukminee whom he loved very much. He did not want his sister to marry Krishn, but to Shishupaal, while Rukminee loved Krishn. So Rukminee called Krishn and Krishn abducted Rukminee from a temple. As Rukmee came to know about it he went to bring back his sister, but Krishn defeated him, tied with His Chakra (Divine Disc) and left him there on the way. Later Rukmee married his daughter Rukmvatee to Krishn's son Pradyumn. In Pradymn's marriage, Rukmee and Balraam played dice game. Balraam waas drunk, he put double the amount on stake whatever amount Rukmee put. Once he got confused with the amount and a quarrel arose between them. It turned into fight and Krishn killed Rukmee.

Saatyaki
His other name was Yuyudhaan. Saatyaki was a cousin of Krishn. He learned archery from Arjun. He used to fight like Arjun. He fought from Paandav's side in Mahaabhaarat war. He regarded Arjun very much. He killed Bhoorishravaa and Somdatt on the 14th day of war.

Sahadev
Sahadev was the son of Jaraasandh. When Jaraasandh went to fight with Bheem at the time of Yudhishthir's Raajsooya Yagya, he noticing some bad omens, appointed his son Sahadev as the king of Magadh in advance.

Sakradev
He was the son of king Kaling and as killed by Bheem on the 2nd day of the war.

Sanjaya
Sanjaya was the new Saarathee of Dhritraashtra. When Adhirath left his job from being Saarathee of Dhritraashtra because of his son Raadheya's education, he brought Sanjaya to him to be employed as king's Saarathee. Later he was given Divine sight to see and hear war scenes by Ved Vyaas Jee before war started. Then he told the whole account of war to blind Dhritraashtra. In Udyog Parv, Chapter 22, when Dhritraashtra sends Sanjaya to Yudhishthir as a messenger, he calls him "the son of Gavalgan".

Satya and Satyadev
These two kings were killed by Bheem on the 2nd day of the war.

Satyajit
He was the one of the ten sons of Drupad - Dhrishtdyumn, Satyajit, Shikhandee, Uttamaujaa, Yudhaamanyu etc. He was killed protecting Yudhishthir from Drone from capturing him. Drone killed him on the 12th day of the war - Drone's 2nd day of Commandership.

Satyasen
Satyasen was the son of Karn. He had three brothers - Vrishsen, Sushen and Bhaanusen.

Saubh
He was a friend of Shishupaal. Krishn was fighting with him while Paandav were playing dice game with Kaurav.

Shaalv
King Shaalv was the king of Shaalv Desh. First he appears on the scene while he faces Bheeshm. He fought with him bravely but was defeated in no time. Bheeshm freed him. Next time he appears in Kaashee's princesses' Ambaa, Ambikaa and Ambaalikaa's Swayamvar. He loved Ambaa and Ambaa loved him. In this Swayamvar she was going to choose him as her husband. But in the meantime Bheeshm came and took all the princeses for his half brother Vichitraveerya. Shaalv followed them, fought Bheeshm but still could not win him. Bheeshm again freed him saying that "I cannot take his life whom I have once granted life.

Shal
He was a great friend of Duryodhan. He was the son of Somdatt, grandson of Baahleek and the brother of Bhoorishravaa.

Shalya
Raajaa Shalya was the king of Praagjyotish. He was the brother of Maadree - Sahadev and Nakul's mother. Thus he was Paandav's Maamaa (maternal uncle). When Paandu was coming back from his victory tour, he saw Shalya coming towards him. When Shalya found him as Paandu, he was very happy to see him and immediately he gave his sister Maadree to him. Maadree had two sons from Ashwinee Kumaar - Sahadev and Nakul. 

Shalya was cheated by Duryodhan and was forced to join his side in war. As he heard that Paandav's Agyaatvaas is over, Shalya started towards Upaplavya Nagar to see Yudhishthir. Duryodhan heard this and a scheme came to his mind. He made Shalya's journey as comfortable as he could. He did not allow him to cam his own anywhere. Duryodhan made all the arrangements of his staying. Shalya was very with the arrangement. He thought that it was done by Yudhishthir, because he never saw his host. So once he told the servants that he was very happy with the arrangement and he wanted to see his host. He wanted to give reward to him for this. The servants went to Duryodhan and told this to him. Duryodhan came and greeted Shalya. Shalya was surprised to see him instead of Yudhishthir, but he had already promised to give him reward, so he said to Duryodhan - "I was going to see Yudhishthir on his invitation, but you have won my heart, so ask for its reward." Duryodhan said - "Please be the Commander of my army in war." Shalya said - "I am sorry, I cannot accept this position until Bheeshm is alive." Immediately Karn said - "Then please accept to be my Saarathee." Shalya agreed for it. Shalya then went to Upaplavya, asked Paandav for their forgiveness and blessed them. Yudhishthir was very sorry to know all this, then he said - "I am sorry that we ill have to fight with our Maamaa, but at least do me a favor. When you will be the Saarathee of Karn, please take care of my Arjun as Karn has vowed to kill him." Shalya promised for that.

Shalya killed Uttar, Raaja Viraat's younger son on the 1st day of the war.

Shankh
He was one of the three sons of Raajaa Viraat - Shankh, Shwet and Uttar. He had a sister also Uttaraa. Shankh was killed by Drone in Mahaabhaarat war on the 7th day of the war. Shankh was the last son killed in war.

Shataaneek
Shataaneek was the brother of Viraat and was killed protecting Yudhishthoir from Drone from capturing him. He was killed by Drone on the 12th day of war - 2nd of Drone's commandership.

Shwet
Shwet was one of the three sons of Raajaa Viraat -Shankh, Shwet and Uttar. He had a sister also Uttaraa. He was killed by Bheeshm on the 1st day of war while he wanted to take revenge of his younger brother Uttar's killing by Shalya. He was second son killed in war.

Somak
Janmejaya.

Somdatt
Somdatt was the son of Baahleek of Kuru House. Baahleek was the son of Raajaa Prateep and he had two brothers also - Shantanu and Devaapi. Kaurav and Paandav belonged to Shantanu family. Thus Somdatt was the grandfather of Duryodhan. He fought from Duryodhan's side in Kurukshetra war. He had three sons named Bhoori, Bhoorishravaa and Shal. Bhoorishravaa also fought from Duryodhan's side in the same war. He was killed by Saatyaki on 14th day of war.

Subhadraa
Subhadraa was Krishn's half sister to whom He loved very much. She loved Arjun without seeing him. And Arjun used to love her since the days he was a student of Drone, because Gada, a cousin of Subhadraa, was also there and he was a good friend of Arjun. He used to talk about her to Arjun. So when Arjun was on his Praayshchit Yaatraa, he had a desire to marry her. He didn't know that Subhadraa also loved him, so he asked Krishn's help to win her heart for him. Krishn helped him. He went to Dwaarakaa also and there, on Krishn's advice, he abducted her. They had a son named Abhimanyu.

Susharmaa
He was the king of Trigart Desh. He was the eldest brother and these brothers were known as Trigart brothers. When Arjun went for victory tour for Yudhishthir's Raajsooya Yagya he welcomed him as his friend Indra's son. But at the same time he developed his enmity with Arjun and the brothers sworn in that one day they will destroy Arjun. He was a good friend of Duryodhan too. He helped him in the scheme of identifying Paandav, when Keechak was killed, by attacking on Matsya Desh (Viraat's country) from its southern side. In Kurukshetra war also he helped Duryodhan to keep Arjun and Krishn away from the war field for two days.

Sushen
Sushen was the son of Karn. Karn had three other sons - Vrishsen, Bhaanusen and Satyasen.

Trigart Brothers
Trigart brothers belonged to Trigart Desh. They were also five like five Paandav. They were Susharmaa, Satyarath, Satyavarmaa, Satyaasu, and Satyadharm. Susharmaa was the eldest among them. They took a terrible oath in front of fire that they would either kill Arjun, or be killed by him and would not return from battlefield without fulfilling their oath. Because of taking this oath, they were called Sansaptak.

Ulook
Ulook was the son of Shakuni, Gaandhaar's prince. Thus he was Gaandhaaree's nephew. Duryodhan sent him to Paandav as his emissary just before the war started. Nakul vowed to kill Ulook. And he killed him. He had a brother too named Vrikaasur.

Urvashee
One of the many Apsaraa in Indra's court. Once she was the wife of Pururavaa for many years. Other Apsaraa's names are - Menakaa, Rambhaa, Tilottamaa, Punjikaashalee.

Uttamaujaa
He was one of the ten sons of Raajaa Drupad of Paanchaal - Dhrishtdyumn, satyajit, Shikhandee, Uttamaujaa, Yudhaamanyu etc. He was a great warrior and played an important role in war. he was guarding Yudhishthir along with Yudhaamanyu.

Uttar
Uttar's real name was Bhoominjaya. He was the youngest son of Raajaa Viraat and Sudeshnaa. He had two brothers more named Shwet and Shankh. He had a sister also named Uttaraa who was the student of Arjun (Brihannalaa) to learn dance and music. After Keechak was killed, Duryodhan attacked Matsya Desh, Since Viraat went to fight with Susharmaa the previous day and did not return till then, Uttar had to go to fight with Kaurav army. Draupadee advised him to take Brihannalaa as his Saarathee. Although Uttar was not happy with her suggestion but still not finding any other alternative he took him as his Saarathee. When they reached in the battlefield, Uttar ran away seeing the great Kaurav army, but Arjun would not let him run away. He caught him, exposed himself as Arjun, and then both went to fight with them. Of course Arjun alone defeated Kaurav army and Uttar came back to the city as the winner of the war.

Uttar was the first son of Viraat killed by Bheeshm in Mahaabhaarat war on its 1st day.

Uttaraa
Uttaraa was the daughter of Raajaa Viraat. She had three brothers also - Shankh, Shwet and Uttar. Here Paandav spent their one year of Agyaatvaas. During this period Arjun taught her music and dance in the form of Brihannalaa. Later she was married to Arjun's son Abhimanyu. She was the one who was able to continue Paandav family by giving birth to Pareekshit.

Vikarn
Vikarn was one of the brothers of Duryodhan. He was always in opposition to Duryodhan. He never liked Duryodhan actions. He always tried to explain to him that what he was doing was no good for him, but Duryodhan didn't listen to him. It was he only who spoke in favor of Draupadee when she was brought in the game court.

Vind and Anuvind
They were called Avantee brothers. They were one of Krishn's Buaa's (Vadudev's sister - Raajaadhidevee who was married to Jayasen) sons. They fought from Duryodhan's side.

Vriddhkshatra
Vriddhkshatra was one of the Kaikaya brothers. He was killed by Drone on 14th day of the war - on the same day as Jayadrath was killed by Arjun.

Vrishsen
Vrishsen was the eldest son of Karn. Karn had four sons - Vrishsen, Sushen, Chitrasen and Satyasen.

Vritraasur
Vritraasur was a very powerful Raakshas whom Indra killed with his Vajra.

Yudhaamanyu
Yudhaamanyu was one of the ten sons of Raajaa Drupad - Dhrishtdyumn, Satyajit Shikhandee, Uttamaujaa etc. He was a great warrior and played an important role in war. He was guarding Yudhishthir along with his brother Uttamaujaa.
