Hamlin Lake is more than 12 miles long and covers 5,000 acres and touches Manistee National Forest on the north, Nordhouse dunes to the north and west, and miles of undeveloped wilderness all around. Since the retreat of the ice age, the changing Great Lakes levels and also the coastal dune formation helped create the original, smaller "Big Sable Lake", which made up 90% of the current Hamlin Lake. In 1860, lumberman Charles Mears constructed a dam which raised the lake level an additional 15 feet. The additional flooding created an enormous holding pond for trees felled upstream while providing power for the village shingle mill. The lake and lumber village settlement were named named Hamlin, in honor of Hannibal Hamlin, Mear's choice for Lincoln's vice president.

Today, Hamlin Lake dam, located just inside Ludington State Park, marks a unique historical spot. Swimmers and sunbathers enjoy the park's small beach, picnic lawns, concession stands, hiking paths and marked canoe path tracing the state park's shoreline.

Whether you explore the bayous or head for deeper waters, Hamlin Lake offers a wide variety of fish. Tiger muskie, northern pike, large and small mouth bass, perch, crappie, blue gill offer a great catch, as well as over 600,000 walleye which were planted several years ago. The fishing doesn't cool down in winter either. Tip-ups and shanties dot the ice as fishermen pull in delicious panfish and walleye.

Winter also means cross-country skiing on miles of groomed trails along Hamlin Lake and through Ludington State Park's frozen wilderness, truly making Hamlin a lake for all seasons.

Hamlin Lake Fireworks are scheduled for Saturday, July 3, 2004. For fireworks details and donation information, please click here. (Opens in new window)
