Indira Gandhi Agricultural University (IGAU), Raipur, Chhattisgarh as a State Agricultural University (SAU) came in to existence on January 20th 1987 through the Madhya Pradesh act number 20, 1987, carved out of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) amalgamating its constitutes situated in eighth eastern districts of Madhya Pradesh popularly known as Chhattisgarh namely Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Raigarh, Surguja, Bastar and Balaghat covering a geographical area of 14.4 million hectares (Mha), about one-third of the state and larger that Pubjab, Haryana and Kerala put together. Chhattisgarh predominantly tribal. Region receives unimodel rainfall of 1000-1600 mm averaging about 1200 mm but it is essential monocrop, 80% of it is rice, mostly rainfed rice. It is mandated that IGAU catalysis transformation of the region in to at least double crops besides increasing productivity of rice and other crop in Kharif with the appropriate components of livestock husbandry, fishery and agro-forestry etc. Mission of IGAU is to facilitate continuous improvement in agriculture and allied fields by developing quality manpower, providing relevant technological solutions, piloting their field uses and supporting other related activities. IGAU has very important role to play in the socio-economic development of Chhattisgarh through high quality education, upgradation of agricultural technology, provision of critical input and pilot introduction and demonstration of improverd technologies. The goals to achieve stated mission are as under:

GOALS

To provide quality education in the area of agriculture and allied fields.

To undertake basic, applied and adoptive research and to develop the most appropriate solutios and technologies relevant to the area and the socio-economic conditions of the people.

To provide direct and indirect education and technological support to the public in general and to farmers in the region in particular, with a view to improving agriculture productivity and the economic condition of the rural population.

To develop commercial potential of the agriculture sectror in the region by facilitating and supporting the growth of agro based industires.
