Lai Kin Ngoh, Wendy
Chai Cruises Into The Semifinals
NEW |
Saturday,
6th Dec 2003: Second-seed Lai Kin Ngoh of Malaysia
cruised into the semifinals of the AVIVA Asian Bowling
Tour Hong Kong Leg together with Hong Open champion, Wendy
Chai while Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong marched on his road to
glory. Lai Kin Ngoh, the 1st runner-up of Hong Kong
International Open, received a bye in first round as
second-seed. In quarter-final Lai faced tough challenge
from Singaporean Evelyn Chan. But she had five strikes in
a row and came back to beat Chan 238-209. |
Lai's teammate
and Masters Champion of Hong Kong International Open,
Wendy Chai left three frames open in her quarter-final
game but fortunately managed to beat local women favourite
Cookie Lee 199-172 to reach the semifinals. Lai will face
Cecilia Yap of the Philippines in the second
Filipino-Malaysian semifinals clash tomorrow. Earlier, Yap
defeated Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia 209-192 in the
quarter-final after ousting her compatriot Liza Clutario
220-179 in the first round. |

Wendy Beats Kin Ngoh
To HK Title |
Friday,
5
Dec 2003: National bowler Wendy Chai outplayed
teammate Lai Kin Ngoh to bag the women's Masters title of
the Hong Kong Open at the SCAA Bowling Centre. Another
Malaysian bowler, Shalin Zulkifli, finished third to make
it 1-2-3 finish for Malaysia in the women category.
However,
the victory did not come easy for Wendy, who was forced to
a sudden death thriller after Kin Ngoh took the first game
235-222. But Wendy, a two-time Singapore Open champion,
came back strongly in the deciding game to beat Kin Ngoh
218-204. In the step-ladder finals, Liza del Rosario of
the Philippines fell out of the reckoning when she posted
a low score of 166 to Shalin's 194 and Kin Ngoh's 225.
Shalin settled for third while Rosario finished fourth. |

Kin Ngoh Wants a
Break |
Thursday,
18 Sept 2003: The World Bowling Championships on home
ground have turned out to be a nightmare for Lai Kin Ngoh.
And the Penangite has decided to take a break from
bowling. Yesterday, in an about-turn, Kin Ngoh was omitted
from the team-of-five competition. Youngster Sharon Chai,
who was to sit out the event, was recalled to join Shalin
Zulkilfi, Choy Poh Lai, Wendy Chai and Sarah Yap. The
decision to drop the 27-year-old Kin Ngoh came about
because the management felt the lanes now were not
favouring the southpaws.
|
Even
Finland's Mika Luoto, who won the men's singles gold
medal, had found difficulty after the blistering start.
Almost all the frontrunners for places in the both the
men's and women's Masters Finals are right-handed bowlers.
The Finals feature the top 16 players in the standings of
the all-events. Kin Ngoh said she was not at all
disappointed over not getting to compete in the fives'
event. “The lanes have been tough on left-handed bowlers.
I have the experience but it did not count. Sharon will be
in a better position to strike a balance for the team,”
she said. |
Kin Ngoh,
who suffered a knee injury prior to the championships,
said she would seek treatment before making a comeback to
competitive bowling. “Everything has not gone right for me
for in this world meet. I picked up a knee injury ... then
the lanes were tough on me,” she said. “For me, this is my
worst-ever performance this year. “I will go for treatment
for the injury and I hope to make a return for the Hong
Kong leg of the Asian Tour in December. If I do well
there, there is a chance for me to qualify for the Grand
Slam Finals.” From her results in the singles, doubles
and trios, Kin Ngoh was placed 100th in the overall
standings. |
Southpaw
Alex Liew, who was also left out of the men's team for the
fives' competition, said that he would make a decision by
the end of the year on whether to remain or quit the
national team. |

on Fire to Keep The Men on Their Toes |
|
27th July
2003, Sunday: Malaysia's Lai Kin Ngoh and Shalin
Zulkifli kept the men pros on their toes with fiery
performances on the second day of the International
Foundation Games Invitation Bowling Championships at the
Kegel Bowling Centre here in Lake Wales. Kin Ngoh was in
sizzling form, knocking down super lines of
248-235-236-213-231-243 in the second block of another six
games to leapfrog from 16th placing to fifth. The
Penangite is now the top woman bowler in the 48 mixed
field of the world's best amateur and professional men and
women bowlers. The four bowlers ahead of Kin Ngoh are
men. The 27-year-old Kin Ngoh, who has accumulated a total
of 2,615 pins over 12 games, is trailing leader and
American pro Steve Jaros by 79 pins. |
Colombian
Andre Gomez foiled a complete American domination of the
top four places by finishing second with a total of 2,679
pins. Pete Dohan and Craig Tuholski are third and fourth
with scores of 2,643 and 2,625 respectively. The
25-year-old Shalin, meanwhile, knocked down

International
Foundation Games Invitation Bowling Championships |
|
26th July
2003, Saturday: Shalin Zulkifli finished as the best
Asian bowler after the first block of six games in the
International Foundation Games Invitation Bowling
Championships at the Kegel Bowling Centre here in Lake
Wales. The 25-year-old Shalin, aiming to make amends for
her disappointing outing in the World Ranking Masters
recently, got off to a good start, knocking down lines of
216-222-232 in the first three games. She probably would
have finished in the top five bracket, occupied almost
entirely by professional bowlers, but for her low scores
of 184-196-196 in the last three games played under the
short oil pattern. She finished at 13th spot with a total
score of 1,246 pinfalls. |
Two other
Malaysians, Lai Kin Ngoh and Wendy Chai, who were
the last minute inclusions for the invitational
tournament, finished 16th and 30th spot in the 48-member
field. Kin Ngoh, recovered from a slow start to
post lines of 173-189-227-227-191-202 for a total score of
1,209 pins. World Ranking Masters quarter-finalist Wendy's
hopes of a decent start went bust with a poor 158 in the
fifth game. She knocked down 187-222-180-204-158-211 for a
total score of 1,162 pins. |

Shalin Gets Another
Crack for Honours After World Masters Flop |
|
25th July
2003, Friday: Three-time Asian number one Shalin
Zulkifli will be out to make a quick rebound in the
International Foundation Games Invitation Bowling
Championships at the Kegel Bowling Centre in Florida this
weekend. The 25-year-old Shalin has been invited to
participate in the US$35,000 tournament, which will see
the best men and women bowlers in the world – both
amateurs and professional – battling for honours. Shalin
bowled below par in the World Ranking Masters, which ended
on Wednesday at the same venue. |
She finished
joint 12th with teammate Lai Kin Ngoh after 24
games. Sarah Yap also failed to shine in the Masters,
finishing 20th out of the 24 competitors. |
Wendy Chai was
Malaysia's best performer. She qualified for the
quarter-finals in sixth place but was eliminated by
Venezuela's Margalit Mizrachi. |
Shalin, the
only Malaysian invited for the meet, has vowed to give a
better account of herself. “This tournament will be
tougher because we will be bowling aside some renowned

Kin Ngoh's Birthday
Wishes |
|
|
1st
July 2003, Tuesday: Bowler Lai Kin Ngoh celebrated
her 27th birthday yesterday. And she hopes to be
granted her three wishes in tournaments this year.
Kin Ngoh will be out to redeem herself in her second
appearance in the World Ranking Masters in Florida
from July 19-24 and in the World Championships on home
ground from Sept 9-20. She also harbours high hopes of
winning her first-ever Asian Tour title this year
after coming close on many occasions since the
championships' inception in 1998. “I did not make the
second round (top eight) in my first outing in the
World Ranking Masters in Denmark last year. |
I hope I
can adapt to the lane conditions this time and finish
among the top three,” said the southpaw. Besides Kin
Ngoh, Malaysia will be represented by Shalin Zulkilfi,
Sarah Yap and Wendy Chai in the Masters event. Ben
Heng is the sole Malaysian competitor. Kin Ngoh and
Ben are last-minute inclusions for the tournament
following the withdrawal of three Koreans. The
tournament features the top eight bowlers from the
Asian, American and European zones. In her debut in
the 1999 World Championships in Abu Dhabi, Kin Ngoh
finished without a medal. |
“This
time, I hope to be in contention for medals in all six
events (singles, doubles, trios, all-events, team and
Masters),” she said. Kin Ngoh also hopes to stamp her
mark as a bowler to be reckoned with on the world
level stage. |
In Asian
competitions, Kin Ngoh bagged two gold medals in the
1996 Asian Championships in South Korea. She was the
runner-up in the Brunswick Asian Champion of Champions
in 1997; won the silver in the Masters of the Asian
Games last year and several gold medals in the SEA
Games. But an Asian Tour title has eluded her thus
far. “I hope to win one of the legs this year. I have
finished as the runner-up and qualified for the
semi-finals many times since 1998 but I have never
been lucky to win it,” said Kin Ngoh, who was the
runner-up in last season's Hong Kong leg and Grand
Slam Finals. “I hope this year will be a better one
for me,” said Kin Ngoh. She was not able to celebrate
her birthday together with twin sister Kin Har. But
there was a do for Kin Ngoh, who has served the
country for eight years. |
