5th World Tenpin
Team Cup |
|
23rd
February, Odense: Malaysia emerged as World
Champions after winning both the Men's and Women's
final matches of the stepladder finals of the 5th
World Tenpin Team Cup in Odense Bowling Hall. The Men
ousted defending champion Sweden in a trilling finale
while the Women defeated both second-seed USA and then
top-seed England for their first-ever official titles. |
The
Malaysian women, who finished third after a grueling
five-day of preliminary rounds met with second-seed
USA for the first of the stepladder finals.
|
|
Despite
starting nervously to loose to their opponents 167-174 in
the first match, the women came back strongly in the
second to overpower the Americans 244-217 for a a crack at
the title on 411-391 total. In the next crucial encounter
against top-seed England, Malaysian found renewed
confidence when they trounched the English women 218-173
and then went on to bag the title with another convincing
win over their opponents 191-156 for a total of 409-329
and a well deserved win. Malaysia could not ask for a
better day when immediately following the win by the
women, the men was superb as well. Malaysia took the first
match beating the defending champion, Sweden 223-210. |
The Malaysian
women played United States led by World Cup champion
Shannon Pluhowsky first. They had lost to the US team
twice at the same stage at Canada in 1996 and Holland in
1998. But this time, they fought tooth and nail to upstage
the Americans 411-391 over two games to set up a finale
with leaders England. Malaysia lost the first game by
seven pins when Kin Ngoh failed to get a strike in the
last frame against the Americans. In the second, both
teams matched strike for strike. Malaysia had four strikes
but the US did better with six strikes. All pointed to
another defeat for the Malaysians but they rose to the
occasions. Pluhowsky had missed a strike in the final
frame but Kin Ngoh got it right this time, hitting home
three strikes in a row to move on to the final
stage. After the herculean win over the US, it did not
seem difficult against England. In a lopsided match,
Malaysia went on to beat the English team 399-329. |
22nd
February, Odense: England made the stepladder finals
as top-seed in the Women's division of the 5th World
Tenpin Team Cup at Odense Bowling Hall at the end of the
last round of 9 matches this afternoon with a comfortable
margin of 16.5 points ahead of nearest rival USA in second
while Malaysia took the final spot in third. It was nail
biting event all the way in all the matches today and at
one stage the Malaysian were down to 5th spot behind
Germany and Finland. Shalin who was anchoring the team in
all previous rounds, felt tremendous pressure and was
having problem in focussing her game. The women defeated
Denmark in the first match with 2-1, but lost both the
next two matches 0-3 to Mexico and Italy. |
The team was
very tensed with Germany and Finland bowling well. The
decision by Head coach, Mats Karlsson to change the line
up with Kin Ngoh taking over the responsibility of
anchoring paid off. I played poorly today in the earlier
matches. Thanks to Kin Ngoh for taking over the anchor.
She was just great that she carried the team well," said
Shalin who is the captain of the team. "I just listened to
the coach and concentrate on every throw," said Kin Ngoh.
"I'm glad that we made it but it's not over yet as we
still have job to do in tomorrow's stepladder finals." |
