Tamara Wendal Asks in Category Nutrition 101:
Hi, I was wondering if you could give me any examples short and long term effects of not eating the
right foods and nutrients? What are the effects of not eating right?
thanks
By the way Tamara, I hope this was not homework. This system is not set up as an alternate to
proper research. I am going on the idea that this is NOT a homework question and that is why I
answered it.

The short and long term effects of not eating quality choice foods:

Remember, all food has calories. But some food choices deliver more than just calories but quality
nutrients as well. For example, fried potato chips versus a baked potato.

Third World countries are the clearest example of people eating mostly empty carbohydrates for
survival, but are malnourished. Malnourished is NOT THE SAME as starvation. Malnourishment means
consuming calories that do not deliver quality nutrition.

So the short and long term effects of eating poor quality calories are:

A few days:
no obvious effect

A few weeks:
begin to feel tired more quickly. Emotional changes and mood swings. Skin breakouts, hair starts to
look wiry instead of healthy, nails begin to break. Easier to get sick. Harder to bounce back from
illness. Getting fat, or getting too thin (you did not say the amount of food or type - so this could go
either way). Short term memory blocks - as in poorer performance when taking exams.

Months to years:
Diagnoses of various illnesses, amenorrhea ( stopping of menstrual cycle), obesity or anorexia,
reduced daily performance abilty - too tired to walk, too tired to lift, too tired to play, slow response to
clients etc., loss of muscle and slowed metabolism. Increased risks for new illnesses, slow healing,
and loss of years and quality of life.

Hope this helps.
