ROUND SIX
Saturday the 1st
of May.
GLENELG 2.1 12.1
14.6 18.7 (115)
WEST 4.1 6.1 9.3 10.5 (65)
I was unable to
make the trip to Lameroo to see the game, but reading
Doug Robertson's "Sunday Mail" report provides
further encouragement regarding the improvement of the
Tigers this year. The fact that the last two wins have
been achieved without star ruckman Matthew Golding and
yesterdays without Chad Cornes is further evidence of a
maturity that has been absent from Brighton Road for some
time. A win against Norwood at the bay next Saturday will
elevate Glenelg into third, possibly second spot on the
ladder.
REBORN BAYS
BLAST INTO 4
By Doug Robertson.
Glenelg's busy and stinging mosquito fleet ripped apart
West Adelaide at Laineroo oval yesterday to secure a
place in the top four.
The stunning 60-Point drubbing underlined the Tigers,
improvement from last season.
Glenelg employed a mystifying ro-tation system from
defence to create havoc and apparently bamboozle West for
four quarters. But it was the Tigers attack -on the ball
and superior skills that brought about the showcase 18.7
(115) to 10.5 (65) victory.
Glenelg thrashed West in every as-pect of football on a
spacious ground in faultless condition which should have
suited its tall, high-marldng key forwards.
Significantly, Glenelg did not ease from its
hard-pressing and hassling style as it would have in
seasons past.
Ignited by Richard Kelly, Nick Chigwidden and Matthew
Liptak in the centre and previously unsighted Mark
Harwood in attack, the tenacious Tigers booted 10.1- one
scraped the inside of the goal post- to 2.0 for the
second term and reduced West to a shambles.
Harwood had just two hand-balls in the opening term,
attacked the ball with more spark than he has shown in
weeks. The Port Power listed utility gave off seven
damaging handballs for the term with four resulting, in
-goals - two each to rovers Liptak and Sudjai Cook.
Liptak took up the challenge kicking four goals for the
quarter - including one in time-on when he had two
unchallenged swipes at a loose ball before soccering it
through from just outside the square. He picked up 13
damaging possessions in a term that heralded a bleak day
for the Bloods.
West's defence had no answer to the swarm of Tiger
runners down the field. The few times the Bloods stumbled
forward through Robert DiRosa or Matt Connell who had an
intense battle with Simon Hele before going on the ball
after half-time - the pedestrian forwards fumbled
seemingly easy marks or sent out wild snap-shots to
little effect.
Greg Mellor starred in the first term and continued to be
a threat all day and Adam Richardson deserved re-spect.
But for the remaining West forwards, it was a day to
forget.
The Bloods reshuffled its line-up at the main break and
Put up a limited revival in the third term making the
first three scoring shots.
But when Glenelg put the pedal down with goals to the
hyperactive James Byrne and Ben McEntee, it left West in
its impressive wake.
"It was all set up around the ball and guys stuck to
the game plan," a sat-isfied coach Tony McGuinness
said. "We were hard at the ball and fast around the
footy and we crumbed well when it went forward - our guys
were front and centre. It was a good result."
Ex-West ruckman Brooke Fogden made a difference when he
came off the bench and he rotated with Rod Jameson at
full back on the dangerous Adam Richardson.
West defender Ed Richardson and rover Mark DiRosa hung in
all day, Mark Stewart won the centre ball-ups, Connell
and Mellor had glimpses of quality and Greg Dempsey
lifted in the second half. But overall it was a poor
performance for a team that has the talent to be in the
top three.
"We were flogged," coach Michael Taylor said.
"We were flat-footed and slow to the footy. We
haven't played a good game this year at all
and
they have to take up the challenge. The only winner we
had was Mellor- we couldn't have gone any worse.
