The GMS Legion is Georgia's fastest-growing small press adventure
serial. It tells the story of teenagers in the late 1980s fighting to
keep order in a very strange world that we call "public high school."
Since 1983, literally dozens statewide have thrilled to the daring
exploits of these intrepid adventurers, concocted by a crack team of
middle school kids. In 1990, their co-creator released the first "proper"
indie-style, multi-Xeroxed mass market editions of three volumes collecting
and retelling the best of their wild and woolly adventures. In 1997, a
thrilling new chapter was sown when the first two volumes were special editioned
with extra pages, the third was tweaked just enough to look a little different,
and plans were unveiled for brand new stories in a beautifully designed,
airtight continuity that would take these super-teens into the next millennium...and
beyond!
Drawing inspiration in unequal portions from Charles Schulz, "Robo-Hunter,"
Massimo Bellardinelli, Gardner Fox, Some Kind of Wonderful and, of course,
DC Comics' The Legion of Super-Heroes, presented in cliffhanging segments
of six to ten pages each, but still not lettered very well at all, twelve
volumes of super-adventures ranging from the desperately silly to the
dangerously serious have been completed, as our heroes keep order in Smyrna's
pride and jewel of edermakation, Scandal High School.
Set in the mid-80s (October 1987 in Book 13), GMS Legion perfectly
encapsulates a time and place most of us would choose to forget, but
truly one far more dangerous than what we put up with, with threats that
make acne and dating pale by comparison.
For some reason, however, the threats of acne and dating remain
the most traumatic...
THE GMS LEGION is primarily written and drawn
by Grant Goggans, and published in Atlanta three times a year. Each 8.5x11"
volume contains 80 or more black and white pages. The tone varies from
slapstick comedy to dark drama, and, provided you're OK with the occasional
"f-word," is suitable for all ages. It puts superhero action in the middle
of a giant canvas of a story that stretches from teenage heartbreak to science
fiction action to metaphysical exploration of the reality of our universe.
More importantly, it's extremely funny, with vivid, three-dimensional characters.
It has won praise and plaudits from California to Germany and has a small
but devoted fandom waiting impatiently for the next installments in the story.
The present gang of talents contributing to Grant's series includes
Tory Baker, Matt Ceccato, Neal Conner, Dave Merrill and Brooke Williams.
Previous contributors include Blake Bohannon, Trey Green, Marie Henderson,
Ron Hester, Kecia Plummer, David Prosser, Victoria Rubin, Randy Stewart
and Devlin Thompson.
