I've found much of what you have reported here, and found it not very historically correct. First of all, Queen Elizabeth 1st was Queen of England from 1558-1603 (??agreed), James VI (James 1st of England) ruled from 1603-1625 It is true. James ruled England from 1603-1625. However, he "ruled" Scotland from 1567 (he was born in 1566) until 1603 when (upon the death of Queen Elizabeth) he succeeded to the throne of England. Our original history on the Caldwe l family name mistakenly indicated that James had ruled from 1543. It was, in fact, his mother who ruled (Mary Queen of Scots) from 1543 until she was forced to resign in 1567, when James' father (Henry Stuart) died. The Caldwell history (contained at thi site) has been appropritely corrected. Thanks Karen! I believe it was James the st (??) of Scotland who was the one to invite the brothers to Scotland. He was King from 1513-1542 (James V was king from 1512-1542). However, he was an infant when he became king, and did not officially begin his rule until 1528. Also, Francis I of France ruled from 1515-1547, and Charles IV of the Holy Roman Empire served 1516-1556.

I have also researched the Barbarosa Brothers. I recommend the book "Pirates Ahoy" by Charles B. Driscoll, and History of Piracy by Irene Gosse. Pirates Ahoy was very enlighting. I personally do not believe our christian ancestors were in anyway associ ted with these Muslum Turks who used Christian slaves to row their ships. The brothers became well known in 1504 when they captured two of the Pope's Galleys. These ships were almost ten times the size of the pirates ship, so it was a great feet! They then put the fleet to work as slaves. The Barbarous' were African pirates, who probably came upon the Caldwell brothers and perhaps a band of pirates that they belonged to. My personal guess is that it was the Barbarous brothers who defeated the Caldwel fleet (sounds good to me!). The eldest brother Arouj or Horuk (known as red beard, for obvious reasons) was defeated in 1519, and apparently all who were with him were killed. His brother Kher-ed-din was not with him, and he took over his brothers rule of the seas. He died in July 1546. Also note that de Caldwell would be a French name, as 'de' is a French article that was very common. I have several French Huguenunot [sp] ancestors, and many are DeMott, DeMaree, DeMontfort ect. Even Walt Disney was of French ancestry, his ancestors be ng from 'Iseny sur la Mar', or D'Iseny. Has anyone ever researched the fact (claim?) that the brothers aquired land from the Bishop Douglas (not that I know of)? I should think there would be some record? My guess is that the Caldwells w nt to Scotland between 1530-1540. My next job is to review French dictionaries to see if Cauldwell had any meaning in French or perhaps Italian would be another place to check!(I have already done some of that and find nothing in the French would could have resulted i the name 'Caldwell'. In addition, several professional research firms do indicate that the name began in Scotland--see quoted sources elsewhere at this site)

I have what I believe to be my family line>

Alexander of the three brothers, probably born around 1500. I believe he was in Scotland before having a family and the next generation is said to be William Caldwell. Personally I'd guess his date of birth c1530'-1550's. William is said to be the fath r of John Caldwell, assuming John was born late 1500's and died 1639. From Solway Firth, Ayrshire, Scotland, he was a merchant in Londonderry and Enniskillen[sp] County Fermanaugh, Ireland. Will proven 1640. He married Mary Sweetham c1620's?? and had t e following children: William, John baptized in 1630, Mary, James, Margaret, Joseph, Alexander. I believe William to be my next line, born c1628 and said to have married Elizabeth Ann Houston. They were the parents of Alexander b. 2 Sept 1660 in Derry, Ireland. Alexander was the father of Alexander Jr. born 1690 in Lake Yoh?, Northern Ireland. Alexander married his cousin Mary Colwell of Wales sometime between 1726 when Mary was 18 and 1735 w en their son William is believe to have been born. William married Mary McClelland c1756 and they were the parents of ten children, among them my ancestor William Jr. born c1763. William's wife is unknown at present, but he was the father of my great-great great grandmother Mary Caldwell. She married Thomas Powell in 1805 in Nicholas County, Ky. Their daughter Eliza married George Parish and I descend through the Parish line.

Very interesting!! My niece Julia Caldwell White from Washington, DC sent me your address and I have enjoyed it. Some is familiar to me some not. My grandfather was Judge Harmon Caldwell Drew of Minden, LA. He was the son of Katie Roberta Caldwell Drew of Rocky Mount, LA. Hi Michael, I have enjoyed your web site. It is very well done and lots of good information. I especially enjoyed the will of David Caldwell. The two letters from Isaac James to his wife, Eliza, are interesting. A note: the John he refers to in the letters is probably John Gillespie who led many trips back to Nebraska to bring the saints to Utah Territory. Isaac James' brother John didn't le ve Canada. His descendants live there today. You are through the David Henry line who went to Canada. Are you living in Canada? I am writing from Tooele, Utah, about ten or twelve miles from Rush Valley. Mary Ann is buried in a small cemetery in Clover (Rush Valley). I come through the oldest sister's line. Ann Caldwell Yates lived in Monroe, Michigan at the same time as the other Caldwells, but she didn't go west with the rest of the family. My ancestors on her line lived in Ohio. He was adopted by his aunt Myrtal Caldwell and her husband Claire Browne. I believe this took place n CA. Hello from Canada! You've done a great job with your site! I have a few more pieces for the puzzle. My Grandfather (William) and his brother (John) imigrated to Canada in approx. 1894 from Colraine Ireland. John never married and settled in Saskatoon Sask tchewan. William was a trader who lived briefly in Vancouver B.C. and then settled in Grande Prairie Alberta opening up a successful trading post. I've never come across much about the Caldwells in Canada and I haven't seen anything about the town of Colraine, which I had been told was an ancestral home.
