Truly Fine

I love movies and here are a few of my favories. There are others I love, but these were the few I'm really into right now. I'm not saying these are a ll cinematic masterpieces, but they don't have to be.

Elizabeth: Well, this is all about being a history nerd and adoring this wonderful look at one of the most powerful and skillful monarchs at a particularly interesting moment in European history. And Cate Blanchett is wonderful. Mr. Showbiz

Clerks: If you hate your job or find life a little unsatisfying, Kevin Smith's first and best movie features a couple of sympathizers. It's one of the funniest movies you'll ever see. Mr. Showbiz

Office Space: If you hate your job...oh, wait, well this is a look at the evil world of corporate work where your ever present idiot boss makes you resent the dreck you're forced to do even more. Ron Livingston is the perfect head of a perfect cast and if you appreciate Dilbert you'll love this. Mr. Showbiz

Rebel without a Cause: The magnificent James Dean in such a compelling movie. Though JD (juvenile delinquent) flicks aren't the rage anymore, Dean's powerful performance, the sad story, and the other fine actors make this film more than worth watching. Mr. Showbiz

While You Were Sleeping: Sure it's kind of a hokey, fluffy romantic comedy, but sometimes you need those. And Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman are both so cute. It's just a nice guilty pleasure I love to watch. Mr. Showbiz

The Mask of Zorro: I'm not a big action movie gal, but this movie was just delightful. Two Zorros for the price of one, great stories of avenging deaths of loved-ones by purely evil villains, romance, courage, and some nice swashbuckling moments. Mr. Showbiz

Sixteen Candles: Of all the '80s Brat Pack movies, this is my favorite. It's my teenage life up on screen. Well, maybe less a fascimile of my life, but more how I felt: lame and pining over a cute boy in school. (Thank God for getting over yourself.) Mr. Showbiz

Rear Window: My fave Hitchcock flick with the brilliant James Stewart, the gorgeous and glamorous Grace Kelly (she's a smart girl and her dresses are a wonder), and perfectly played suspense. So good it inspired a Simpsons parody. Mr. Showbiz

The Goonies: I don't really know why I love this movie, but when it comes on TBS, I find myself watching, rivited, unable to look away. Maybe it's the cute young Sean Astin, the cute young Josh Brolin, the teen queen with attitude Martha Plimpton, a few other '80's regulars, the future student body president of my college and an awesome pirate ship. Mr. Showbiz

Almost Famous: This is such a wonderful movie and I think Cameron Crowe's labor of love mark on it is what truly make it special. It's such a movie about love and music and the rock'n'roll lifestyle and the associated mess. And while I kind of hate the '70's (not that I was there or anything), nostalgia is wonderful. Mr. Showbiz

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: Led by the pretty Nick Moran, Guy Ritchie's intricate tale with is mostly funny and surprising. The plot twists get kind of messy, literally, but always fun. Mr. Showbiz

The Full Monty: Sure it starts of like another cookie cutter victims-of-Thatcher-era-economics-northern-Brits-out-of-work flick, but then it just soars, turning into a brialliant comedy about the things you do for your dignity and your kids. And it ends in the most perfect possible place--the climax. Mr. Showbiz

Die Hard: The single best action film ever made. I watched it for the first time fairly recently and I have to say I'd been missing out. It's smart and funny with no loopholes and when you start to wonder about something, the movie always anwers all your questions just right. Mr. Showbiz

Thirteen Days: Apparently this is a movie people either fall asleep at or are pretty impressed by. Apparently it's the nerd in me again, but the movie definitely was suspenseful and engaging, even if Kevin Coster is sort of distracting, the outcome's not a surprise and the first half is mostly (now) dead white men talking in rooms. Mr. Showbiz
