Cairo & Alexandria Stock
Exchange
Total number of listed companies reached 925 as of end of April 1999. The total number
of listed government bonds is 112 whereas corporate bonds are 21. During the month of
April, the market witnessed the listings of 14 new companies with total capitalization of
LE 392 million. Volume traded for April reached 33.4 million shares whereas value traded
amounted to LE 1.436 billion. On the other hand, the OTC trading amounted to LE 202.7
million i.e. 12.36% total trading (on- and off-exchange trading) which reached LE 1.639
billion.The ten most active stocks represented 60.72% of the total volume traded and
61.29% of the value traded for the month.Total market capitalization amounted to LE 95.6
billion, which is higher than March figure (LE 93.7 billion) by 2.0%.
Ghana
Ghana Stock Exchange
The Ghana Stock Exchange was incorporated in July, 1989 as
a private company limited by guarantee under Ghana's Companies Code, 1963 [Act 179].The
Exchange was given recognition as an authorised Stock Exchange under the Stock Exchange
Act of 1971 [Act 384] in October, 1990 and trading on the floor of the Exchange commenced
in November, 1990.
Mauritius
Mauritius Stock Exchange
The Stock Exchange of Mauritius Ltd (SEM), was
incorporated in Mauritius on March 30, 1989 as a private limited company. The mission of
the Stock Exchange of Mauritius Ltd., a privately owned organisation with a public
mandate, is to operate and promote an efficient, liquid, fair, transparent, and
co-regulated securities market in Mauritius.
Namibia
Namibia Stock Exchange
Trading on the Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX) has been
breaking records in the first seven months of 1999, with volumes and values traded soaring
and the NSX Overall and Local indices showing strong growth. The listing in July 1999 of
insurance company Old Mutual, bringing an estimated 85,000 Namibian shareholders to the
Namibia Stock Exchange. The share price climbed sharply from the pre-listing offer price
of N$11.25 to reach a peak of N$13.60 before slipping back, but holding a price of over
N$12.00 in non-stop trading.
South Africa
Johannesburg Stock Exchange
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange operates an equities market with
many of its members also trading bonds and financial futures, traditional options are
traded on an OTC basis. For the week ending 28th August 1999, volume of shares purchased
was 779,107, 000.
Tanzania
Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) was incorporated in
September 1996. It is a company limited by guarantee. The formation of the DSE followed
the establishment of the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA) by the Capital
Markets and Securities Act, 1994. This is the industry regulatory body established with
the initial mandate of promoting conditions for the development of capital markets in
Tanzania.

Lusaka Stock Exchange
The Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE) was established with preparatory
technical assistance from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank
in 1993. The Exchange opened on 21st February 1994. The formation of the Exchange is part
of the government's economic reform programme aimed at developing the financial and
capital market in order to support and enhance private sector initiative.
