Before you Sign Up

Before signing up for eBay it is recomended that you read all of this page to get a good idea of what you need to do.

To get started buying and selling in eBay's online auctions, you must first become a registered user.
eBay requires all users to submit the following information:

  • Name
  • E-mail address
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
While eBay does not check that your name, address and phone number are real, it is best to enter you true details. Other users will find it easyer to trust you and you information is kept private. Buyers and sellers can only get your details if you let them.

eBay and Credit Cards

Depending on the email address that you submit you may be required to give eBay your Credit Card details. This occurs when you give eBay an email address at a website that gives people free email accounts. There are several reasons that you may not want to give you credit card details online:

  • You have Security and Fraud concerns
  • You have Privacy concerns
  • You don't trust eBay
  • You do not have a Credit Card
It is entirely possible to buy and sell goods on eBay, and pay any ebay fees, without using credit cards at all. To avoid having to give any credit card details to eBay you need to give them an email address that is not at hotmail, yahoo or any other free website. Most ISPs offer email accounts. Alternativly you could create a new, temporary, email address at a site that eBay does not recognise as free. www.maorimail.net.nz is one such site.

eBay and Spam

While eBay itself does not send unsolicited emails to it's users, there are some people and programs that 'crawl' the site looking for peoples email addresses to send spam to. Because of this it is best to sign up for eBay using an acceptable address (if you don't wan't to give eBay you credit card details), and then change your email address in your user details to a seperate account for ebay use. The most popular sites for this are Hotmail and Yahoo.

You are now ready to Sign Up. Good Luck.
