Benma's Spring Splash II

This upstart "Playstation" came from nowhere to layeth the smacketh down on the Saturn, and force Nintendo to rely on five games to sell systems (Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 007, Zelda, and Pokemon). But it's first generation games were already superior to those from the Saturn, and even better than some of the second generation games (mostly because Sega didn't release a lot of the good games here, especially later in the system's life.)

Anyways, I got my PSX because of Street Fighter Alpha, and for some reason ended up buying Battle Arena Toshinden with it also. And that turned out to be a good move! Toshinden was cool, as well as my first foray into the 3D fighting genre (I didn't like Virtua Fighter and Tekken, and I still don't.) Crash Bandicoot was cool, but then a game called Tomb Raider came out. And of course I bought into the hype.

But this game SUCKED!! TOMB RAIDER has to be, along with Yoshi's Story (N64) the worst piece of crap I ever paid money for. It had the worst control of any video game I've ever played, and that's including Atari's asteroids and the unpredictable space jump. It's pathetic. The cut scenes were pretty nice, but there weren't enough of them, and then I bust my butt for how many hours and the ending is about two minutes long, including credits. NEVER AGAIN.

So while adolescent males are flocking to get the numerous sequels, I settled down with a little game called Final Fantasy VII in Fall of '97. Now I wasn't one to use strategy guides, but my roommate and I didn't want to miss anything, and I figured I didn't need to be wasting time going around in circles when I should be studying. But even so, I spent over 90 hours on the first game. And then played it again immediately thereafter. Again during Christmas break, and then my "quick game" during Spring semester (ed. note--see favorites/high scores). In all, I played through the game SIX times, by far my favorite game in the series. Unfortunately, I still can't get the date scene with Barrett. ;)

It was that deal with Square that led to the final crushing blow for Saturn and dominance over Nintendo in this round of the console wars. Xenogears, FFVIII, Legend of Mana, FF Anthology...all of these great games are being brought to the PSX, and not to Nintendo because of their cartridge format. It will be interesting to see how battle between the GD-ROM of the Dreamcast and the DVDs of PS2, Dolphin, and X-Box plays out.
