"Yet my mind was not at rest, because nothing was acted, and thoughts
ran into me, that words and writings were all nothing, and must die, for action
is the life of all, and if thou dost not act, thou dost nothing." (Gerard
Winstanley)
Organise!- ASF is not involved with parliamentary democracy, seeing it as at best a distraction and a sham. We are not in the business of building, nor do we support, any political parties. This means that we have time to do something vaguely useful instead. Here are a few examples of the sort of things ASF members have been involved with recently...
We focus on the workplace as we recognise the power of our class as producers.
We have been active in supporting workers involved in a number of disputes
recently. For example, supporting the sacked airport security workers (see
Solidarity bulletin 10), doing collections and other
support work for the firefighters (picture),assisting
McDonalds Workers and the employees
of Richardsons fertiliser plant in Belfast who occupied their factory (see
bulletin 12).
Many members of the ASF are also active in their own workplaces. When we
talk about workers, we don't just mean those in paid employment, we also
support and get involved with the struggles of students, the unemployed
and domestic workers. For example, in the past we have done work around
benefit issues. We try to keep people informed with what we're about through
a number of means. We regularly produce Solidarity
Bulletins and hold open meetings (there is now one every month in Belfast,
contact us for details of the next
one). We also work with the Belfast Media Collective
who, amongst other things, produce and present a weekly radio show.
The women's commission (open to everyone) exists to
deal with the subordination of women in Irish society and has organised
a number of events. Other recent campaigns have been against sectarianism,
as well as anti-election activity. We have
also been involved in anti-war protests, particularly around Shannon airport
where US military planes have been refueling. We develop and maintain contact
with similar organisations around the world as we recognise that the struggle
against capitalism must be an international one. We have been critical participants
in the 'anti-capitalist' movement. For information about upcoming events, please see our Events Calendar
This is just a brief glance at what we get up to
when we're not in the pub... if you fancy getting involved in any of these
activites then give us a shout.
