Bishop Heber College is a religious minority educational institution established by Tiruchirappalli - Thanjavur Diocese of the Church of South India. The BHC traces its origin back to Frederick Schwartz, the first German Missionary supported by S.P.C.K. in South India. He built a School near RockFort in Tiruchirappali.
The college was named after the visit of Reginald Heber, the Lord Bishop of Calcutta. It was the first College to be established in Trichirappali. The College celebrated its DIAMOND Jubliee in 1926 under the Presidentship of the Governer of Madras, Lord Goschen.

The Lindsay Commision on Christian Higher Education in India recommended the merge of the BHC with the Madras Christian College in 1934. The most Rev.Dr.Solomon Doraiswamy, who was consecrated Bishop of Trichy - Tanjore Diocese in 1964. Plunged heart and soul into the effort to review the college. He succeeded in reviving the college on 24th June 1966.

The college grew not only in strength but also in popularity and academic excellence and attracted the students all over India. The college now offers 10 UG, 11 PG and 2 P.G.Diploma Courses of study besides research programmes leading to Ph.D. The revieved College celebrated its SILVER Jubliee in Feb. 1992.

The Department of Library and Information Science was started in 1983. BHC was the only institution offering the Library Science discipline at the under Graduate level in India. Nine batches of students had gone out of the department with B.Sc(Library and Information Science). The course was dropped in 1992.
In the place of B.Sc, a two year M.L.I.Sc Integrated Programme was started in 1992. The curriculum and sylabus are prepared by the University, but the department has the Autonomy to adopt its own strategy of teaching and Learning techniques.
