FROM
THE PRESIDENT |
Dear Alumni,
Greetings!
I am extremely happy in meeting you all through this newsletter.
It’s been our long-standing desire of bringing out such a
bulletin. Through this newsletter,
I
hope to reach all the alumni who were unable to attend our
programs, and renew our contacts. We have successfully completed two
years with a variety of activities.
The association was started during August 2000 at
Bishop Heber College. The association was inaugurated by the then
Principal Dr. Edwin Chandrasekaran.
Our Vision:
Ø Organize workshops and
seminars at both State and National Level for the benefit of AALIS
members and the students of LIS to keep themselves abreast of the
latest trend in our field.
Ø
Organize
seminars and guest lectures of AALIS members for the benefit of the
students and make them aware of the prospects and problems in our
field.
Ø
Create
an endowment, and provide financial assistance to poor deserving
students.
Ø
Identify
the best outgoing
student from the Department of LIS and give a gold medal.
Ø
Represent
collectively to any organization or body in order to uphold our
professional rights and problems and take corrective steps.
Ø
Celebrate
Library Week every year.
We
meet regularly at Bishop Heber College, Trichy and chalk out our
future course of actions. We have also proposed to meet regularly on
October 2 every year apart from our regular meetings. I appeal to
all the old students of the Department of LIS, BHC to attend this
meeting positively and those who are yet to become the members
please do so at the earliest possible.
On behalf of the Alumni
Association I would like to thank and express our gratitude to the
Principal & Administrator of Bishop Heber College and All the
staff members of the Department of Library and Information Science,
for without their support this would remain another dream.

A
TRIBUTE TO Dr. S.R. RANGANATHAN |
|
The September 27 like
January 30 is a day of remembrance, while the Mahathma Gandhi passed
his last breath on January 30, 1948 on September 27, 1972 - exactly
30 years back- S R Ranganathan left this world. |
During Indian independent
movement
days Ranganathan received a telegram from Mahathma to go over to
Sevagram, near Wardha, Maharastra to discuss about library
development in future India. Ranganathan when he joined the Madras
University took a vow that he will never avail any leave of absence
until his retirement. So he sought the advice of Rajaji-C.
Rajagopalachari, the first Governer general of Free India- a close
associate of Gandhi. Rajaji asked Ranganathan to write to Gandhi
that he will meet him after his retirement. SRR did so. |
Ranganathan retired from Madras University in 1942. But his aged
mother who was wanting to visit Kashi Visweswara
asked him to take her to Varanasi. Ranganathan wrote to
Gandhi that he will meet Gandhi on his return journey from Varanasi
and his first duty was to honor the promise he made to his mother.
Mahatma on receipt of the message sent cow's milk to Ranganathan's
mother to Wardha Railway station. Although an orthodox lady his
mother had a bath at Wardha station and drank the milk so graciously
sent by Mahatma.
|
Ranganathan wanted to see Gandhi on his return from Banaras, but
Mahatma went on fast due to Hindu –Muslim riots
and the Father of library science could never meet the father
of the Nation.
|
As such both of them are the real KARMAYOGIs in the real sense of
the word. |
Ps
: This was narrated by Dr Ranganathan
in one of our classes at DRTC. I have published this anecdote
in a magzine Day Star, December 1972 p.9,10.under the title
Karmayogi Dr.S.R.Ranganthan. I used to mention this during
Librarians Day on August 12 at Hyderabad. The DRTC alumni
association arranges every year a Five Law Lecture in memory of SRR
on 27 September and it is hoped
the Library Schools will follow the suit.
