From the Editors                      Volume - I Issue - I  October 2002

Greetings! The dream has come true! Yes our Messenger "AALISMAIL" has  come out with flying  colours.  This Newsletter has a vision to renew our relationship, recall those golden days and cherish. In  this regard, we  request all our  alumni to  share your views  and  ideas   regarding  our  professional challenges.  We  believe this  "Mail"  would  reach  as many  LIS  professionals as possible, apart from our alumni and  integrate  them to address the  various challenges in our field professionally.

We  hope  this  newsletter  is giving  a fairly  clear bird's eye view of the multifarious activities of  AALIS. We welcome suggestions from the readers to make these pages more effective and purposeful.

We record our gratitude to all who encourage us.

A TRIBUTE TO Dr. S.R. RANGANATHAN

The September 27 like January 30 is a day of remembrance, while the Mahathma Gandhi passed his last breath on January 30, 1948 on September 27, 1972 - exactly 30 years back- S R Ranganathan left this world.
During Indian independent movement days Ranganathan received a telegram from Mahathma to go over to Sevagram, near Wardha, Maharastra to discuss about library development in future India. Ranganathan when he joined the Madras University took a vow that he will never avail any leave of absence until his retirement. So he sought the advice of Rajaji-C. Rajagopalachari, the first Governer general of Free India- a close associate of Gandhi. Rajaji asked Ranganathan to write to Gandhi that he will meet him after his retirement. SRR did so.
Ranganathan retired from Madras University in 1942. But his aged mother who was wanting to visit Kashi Visweswara  asked him to take her to Varanasi. Ranganathan wrote to Gandhi that he will meet Gandhi on his return journey from Varanasi and his first duty was to honor the promise he made to his mother. Mahatma on receipt of the message sent cow's milk to Ranganathan's mother to Wardha Railway station. Although an orthodox lady his mother had a bath at Wardha station and drank the milk so graciously sent by Mahatma.
Ranganathan wanted to see Gandhi on his return from Banaras, but Mahatma went on fast due to Hindu –Muslim riots  and the Father of library science could never meet the father of the Nation.

As such both of them are the real KARMAYOGIs in the real sense of the word.

Ps : This was narrated by Dr Ranganathan  in one of our classes at DRTC. I have published this anecdote in a magzine Day Star, December 1972 p.9,10.under the title Karmayogi Dr.S.R.Ranganthan. I used to mention this during Librarians Day on August 12 at Hyderabad. The DRTC alumni association arranges every year a Five Law Lecture in memory of SRR on 27 September and it is hoped  the Library Schools will follow the suit.
