GYMNOSPERMS OF THE PHILIPPINES
Gymnosperms are a group of seed plants with naked seeds, different from the other group of seed plants, the angiosperms or flowering plants, with seeds enclosed in an ovary.

The scheme of classification of Melchior and Werdermann (1954) organizes the gymnosperms into nine orders, which are then divided into three main groups on the basis of wood anatomy, leaf form, seed structure and other considerations.

(Click on the links below for more information about the groups and orders)

Cycadopsida
Order Pteridospermales
Order Bennettitales
Order Pentoxylales
Order Cycadales

Coniferopsida
Order Cordaitales
Order Coniferales
Order Taxales
Order Ginkgoales

Gnetopsida
Order Gnetales
Gymnosperms are primarily plants of temperate habitats and the Philippines, being a tropical habitat, is expectedly a poor gymnosperm country. Throughout the world, there are about 730 species of gymnosperms, of which only 36 taxa (33 species + 3 varieties) occur in the Philippines.
